Hey Peter,
That sounds good enough to work for most of what i need. i do use classes to separate sectors of a project, Transmission, Chassis, Shell . . . . so it goes on, but i never even considered the possibility of sub classes(if i've understood correctly, that is).
Looks like i'm going to have to dig out the manual again and see if i can make more sense on what you've suggested. . . . . . . .
Thanx

Sorry i should have tried to be a little more specific
OK. let's use an example i can understand .(?) . . . .
Front and rear axle/drive train of a vehicle, 4x4 means there can be many common parts, Diff case, drive shafts, etc etc, but, these have to be attached to the wheels via A arms, hubs, and a spattering of other variables that differ front to back. So i create a symbol with the diff and drive shafts that may be the same, then i clone this and add those parts that differ. Now, if something changes in the diff design all clones are updated too but i don't have to worry about the mods i make in the clones compromising the original. The A arms can be improved regarding geometry but the diff just remains constant in the clones.
As it stands, if i need a variable of a symbol i duplicate it how ever many times i need to, keep the original, work on the copies, if i have to adjust the original i then have to copy and paste the mods into the other copies(i'm still on VW 11.5.1 remember) and it seems to me it should be easier.
i use classes too but i don't think they offer what i'm after.
Maybe there's something in recent versions i've missed when i tried them out, but i didn't see anything that could assist me this way.
i'll see if i can doodle something that can help explain too if i'm still not being clear.

While i'm on the subject of Symbols, another thing i'd like to see is a "New" option in the form of a "Clone" option.
Not another duplicate, right now duplicate makes you a copy of a symbol, asks you to give it a name or use the number system, any number of these symbols in your drawing is updated as you modify them, there it ends.
What i would like is the ability to make copies/duplicates/clones of a symbol that update with the original.
in this way, if you add to one of the "Clones" say the front or rear version of the clones these do not alter the original, but if you modify the original the others are also modified in sync.
Am i making any sense? is to me . . . . . . . .

Sounds interesting!!
So, what is it, a plug-in?

Nice examples Mike.
Thanx

The OIP gives a good deal of symbol details and i use it continuously to ensure that the objects dimensions are as desired and is placed correctly in relation to others in a drawing, but i'd like to see it's orientation/rotation with reference to it's angles as well with the option to edit, just like it's coordinates are.
Speaking of coordinates. why can't all objects display these? When editing a symbol or any 3D object for that matter, the OI just displays the objects dimension and scale, but not it's location in the drawing. Using the tape measures fine, but if the X, Y, & Z of all solids were shown at every stage of it's creation, not just when you "Exit Edit", it would make working so much more efficient. AND quicker!!
So:
1st-Editable Angles in the OIP
2nd-Coordinates for ALL 3D objects, not just symbols in the OIP.

Bad News!!!
For me, this is another one of those essential options that should be included in the OI.
Thanx for the info.

Hey Mike,
As we're on the subject of symbols, does 2008 or 2009 show the rotation on each plane as it does with the coordinates in the OI Palette, now? . . . . X, Y, Z . . . are they editable in the OI?
If not i'll have to add it to the wish list.

Sounds GREAT Mike, just hope it solves my niggles.
i've always had trouble in editing when subtracting and adding two objects that share an overlapping line. particularly with very small objects including threaded shafts/screws and always having to "Nudge" them until VW accepts their position, hence my "Precision" query. i see there is still an issue with rendering subtracted solids from your attachment. i refer to the patchy surface colour of the hole. Another of my niggles. Nice work nevertheless.
Thanx.

All i can say is, it's about time!
Now lets see if the adding and subtraction of 3D objects is as stable and precise on complex model construction and has finally come of age.

Hey Blink,
i've moaned about this before.
Being able to tie/link/anchor an object/symbol to a point or another object and then rotate it is a must for the Mechanical fraternity. Hierarchy.
3D Apps have it as an integral part of the the make up. VW Mech. needs it too!!
Engineering is about moving parts, so moving these parts as and when we need to is a must and should be part of the Mechanical Design package, even if architects don't need it.

Jeffery . . . .
Harsh yes, but it keeps you on your toes, and reminds you that we DO care about the product.
-
Got my vote on this one too!
For me this is one of those things that'd be connect with the practicality of symbol editing in situe. Some times you just can't see the parts you're working on for the mass of lines in the drawing.
Wood for the trees and all that.

Don't knock Appleworks, by comparison it's lightyears ahead!!

Gets my Vote!!

I went to rotate (so its a beam not a column) and I got the message: "This operation only works on hybrid objects in plan projection".
What am I missing?
CS1,
if you "Edit"(Command+}) this object you've created and choose the 2D option that appears then delete the 2D object you are presented with, you should now be able to rotate your object in ANY plane as you've eliminated the "Hybrid" shackles that VW ties you to.
Nothing to do with my vast knowledge base, just some VERY useful tips passed on to me by Pat Stanford after he enlightened me as to how i could solve this rotation problem i'd been suffering from and complaining about for what seemed like forever. Thanx again Pat . . . . .
Thing is, i knew about it, i'd just forgotten it. i felt like a real Schmuck!!!

Yeah, i know, that's a pain. They suggest not using the Option key for custom shortcuts, which kind of defeats the object of being able to create your own in the first place.
Maybe NNA could add this ability to the App so that you can use the Opt key for custom shortcuts.
-
One thing you might be interested in, is the fact that in Mac OS X 10.4(Tiger) and Mac OS X 10.5(Leopard) it is possible to create your own Keyboard Shortcuts for both the Finder, Apple Programs and indeed any recent 3rd party Apps like Vectorworks.
i don't know how friendly VW 2008 is to this option, but if you're running VW on a Mac you might want to have a look at the "Keyboard & Mouse Preference Pane" click the "Shortcuts" tab, click the + sign and select VW in the list and start making shortcut combinations.
Be warned, if VW already has a shortcut allocated to a menu command, like something you don't use or a deep hidden command no ones ever heard of, your creation wont work.
i don't know if windows offers these possibilities, but, it should, by now anyway.

Creo que intendo la major de la que dices, y le Standard Industry Shortcut e un Ganador, epsero que alguin te ascucha.
That's enough of my badly spelt Spanish, so before i write something i didn't mean to . . . . .
Most of it gets my vote, especially the reference to 3D modeling software, Maya, C4D, etc. etc.

Forgive me for displaying any degree of ignorance here, but, as i understand it, when a company provides a product to the public, all be it a knowledgeable sector like those who use area specific software, that company(morally) is obliged to provide a product that provides the service that it is made for.
Now, i realise that the computer business bounces around corners at a very rapid pace and every day yesterdays technology is old hat, but if that means a few extra personnel needs to be employed to save programmers the time in researching the problems that manifest themselves in the form of belligerent "Bugs", then so be it!
The reply to this is always, "it'll cost you more to purchase or update the product". . .
This is not the case, 'coz a good product sells it's self, another zone where the "less is more" proves the exception. A good price, means more are sold and so no one looses out.
Big Rant! Sorry guys.
(i know i'm gonna get strung up for this)

Tell it like it is!
This is what bothers me most about software companies, so many of them provide the ubiquitous "Dead End service".
i'm not saying they don't listen, improve, modify and/or solve the problems, but the user has a hard time understanding that they might be interested in our input.
INSTANT feedback would be nice. i'm have been involved in the RC world for many years, and the delight arrived at when a problem, however trivial, is answered rapidly, and some even reply instantaneously to your personal dilemma. Sometimes even by the company owner, and these are not small scale(forgive the pun) small profit companies, they're right up there at/with the forefront of their business and technologies.
They care about their customers . . . . and NNA?
Talk to us . . . . .

Yep! With you on that one, but i'd still like all the basic Nitty Gritty to work well 1st.

Either way, gmm18 that's what i was aiming at, sorry i should have been more specific.
The Organise Menu's Layer options should be available when editing symbols and groups, so that the part of the symbol you are working on is visible and all other components greyed or coloured or differentiated in some way, just as long as they're visible(if you want) . . . . .
It's that word again, isn't it?
Choice!
filleting operation

M.CH, so does that mean you don't have to Ungroup the object before editing it now like you used to and reapply the fillet again when your done?
