  1. I'm actually running on Parallels using XP Professional rather than Boot Camp which seems to work really well, although hearing the windows start up jingle is rather odd!!

  2. I am having a similar experience at the moment, although I am learning Solidworks, the differences are immediately obvious and the whole set up seems more robust and inter-connected right through from the initial sketching to the final drawing presentation, including things like cutting lists which seem to be much less hassle to set up than VW 'worksheets'.

  3. Thanks for the input guys. Here are the FQ & OGL w/ Hidden line, not much better, the text is still appalling although extra lines on the surfaces have disappeared.

To be honest I know the workarounds, one of which is the duplicated viewport showing the text & rendered in wireframe, I am just disappointed that I'm still having to use it to get any kind of result.

  4. These sheet layers are set to 600 DPI and the OpenGL settings are set to very high. One of the viewports has 'draw edges' on.

I was hoping that SP3 would fix this issue.

This is unusable, I can't present this sort of drawing to a client.

  5. I have been having a look at 'Solidworks' recently and it seems to handle the screen/layer stuff much more elegantly using screen animation/transformation.

Maybe VW could take a leaf from their book.

Getting used to a new way of working and learning new workflows is, as far as I'm concerned, quite acceptable but not if it is clumsy & unintuitive.

  6. If the Active plane is set to Screen, then it should remain set to screen plane whenever the Selection Tool or 2D tool is active. This will cause all 2D objects created to be assigned to the screen plane. It will also cause the Selection tool to operate in the screen plane - this also provides the behavior for the 2D Selection tool of 2009.

That's all well and good but why does the plane selection switch to layer plane when the mirror tool or similar is invoked, even though the screen plane has been previously selected.

It's this sort of auto-behaviour that is part (not all) of the problem.

  7. I think you mean dimension.

You can create a dimension in 3D by setting the working plane (using the working plane tool) onto the face of the object you want to dimension.

Then use the drop-down menu for layer/screen selection and select 'working plane'.

Now when you use the dimension tool the dimension will be set to a 3D plane and rotate with the object.

Have a look at this page and view the video called 'Improved 3D Environment' - it's the first one on the list

    http://www.nemetschek.net/library/index.php

The 'Improved Text' video is also worth a look (6th one down on the left hand column)

  8. you can set the active layer plane, on the View Bar. Why not set the active plane to screen plane when you need screen plane, and then set the active plane to Layer Plane when you need layer plane?

That would be great if the layer/screen plane didn't self-select depending on which tool you choose i.e the mirror tool to name but one. Also the working plane has a habit of deselecting and then not showing up in the drop down menu at all after the tool is selected which normally means using the working plane tool to reselect it again. If you're not watching for this sort of auto-erroneauos behaviour it can be really confusing not to mention frustrating.

  9. All I know is that since the implementation of the screen/layer plane there seem to be many more problems.

DXF export, STL export, displaced objects and symbols while editing, erroneous viewport behaviour, text not printing properly, viewports not exporting all the information etc....

I have been using VW for many years and although there are times when there maybe user error, I am normally fairly adept at using the software but since 2010 my workflow has slowed down, even though I have taken the trouble to learn new approaches to accommodate the 'improvements'.

  10. What do you mean by 'quote'?

Do you mean but type onto it? If so you need to set the text onto a layer plane.

-Set the 'working plane' onto one of the cube faces using the working plane tool.

-In the drop down menu (at the top of the window) select working plane.

-Select the text and use the OIP and select working plane.

  11. I am afraid this is an issue that has been the topic of a few frustrated threads.

Yes for the time being it is something to keep an eye on. The layer/screen plane switching is a problem that has not yet been addressed and is, in my opinion, due to lack of foresight in it's implementation, and by that I mean no disrespect to the designers/engineers at VW I just think it needed more thought about how much of a major a change it was.

  12. P.S.

If you are in an isometric view and set the plane option to layer plane, you can use the selection tool (Arrow) to align and snap to points in the 3D environment.

    i.e. the corners/vertices of 2 cubes

  13. If you set the layer/screen plane to screen plane the object will only move in a 2D direction, if it is set to Layer Plane the Z axis (or the axis 'in & out' of the screen) comes into play.

This is also true when rotating and mirroring an object. Although this is a pain in the neck you will eventually get used to checking the plane selection. It can often be the cause of unexpected behaviour.
