  1. Bill,

I just tried "constrain distance" on a door to a wall. Clicked on the door then the wall 90deg to wall that the door is in. Constraint appeared and held when I moved the door or the wall. Could edit or delete using "edit constraints". The one thing I noticed is if you move the wall farther towards the door than the constraint, the constraint is lost, ie. if you move the constrained wall over the door.

  2. Vectorworks Architect or Designer can be ordered with Renderworks, an integrated rendering program. There is no direct structural calculation or energy modeling program integration.

I size structural members in an appropriate structural calculation program and model them in 3D in Vectorworks. This 3D model is the basis for producing construction drawings and details. See the BIM project examples on this website here .

  3. I do not know Rivit, but I do know that Vectorworks Architect w/ Renderworks 2010 is a very powerful and flexible 3D modeling, rendering, and drafting tool. I use it just about every day and, although occasionally frustrated, I have been able to use it to efficiently and effectively design, model, render, and document everything I have dreamed up so far. Also the tech service is very helpful and responsive.

  4. I have used both, and both fail at modeling even the simplest and most common handrail transitions. Might as well not have the handrail/guardrail components. The stair tools themselves are both very useful, however.

  5. Christiaan, I was inclined to take your first comment in good faith and at face value, though I suspected it could be sarcastic (based on your previous posts). Having visited the site you reference, I see that your intent was sarcasm. Was there any constructive result you were hoping for here?

  6. After reading a bunch of reviews on processors, cores, hypertheading, etc. here is what I ordered:

    Micro Express Computers: MicroFlex 95A

    Mid Tower Black ATX Case

    Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3R

    Intel Core i5 750 (2.66GHz 8M Cache)

    8192MB (8GB) DDR3 Memory 1333MHZ

    500GB Serial ATA 7200RPM 16MB Cache

25 in 1 card reader supports CF/MD/SM/SD/MINI SD//MMC/MS/XD (No Floppy)

20X Dual Layer (8.5GB)Multi Format DVD Burner

    On Board 10/100/1000 Network Card

Microsoft Internet Keyboard and Optical Mouse

    High Definition Audio subsystem

    Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready

Microsoft Windows 7 Pro 64-bit (includes XP Mode)

For $1300. I saved with the i5 (supposed to have similar performance to i7, except for multi-threading) and went for more memory and a more powerful graphics card.

  7. Thanks again everyone for your comments. When I started this thread I tried to head-off the Apple vs MS/Windows debate by stating that I am interested in spec's for a new "PC". "PC" usually is taken to mean a Windows species operating system. Ben's question:

Why would anyone choose to spec their PC based on what Apple sells?
was to the point. However, I have not experienced a NAA prejudice against PC's. I seem to remember NAA promoting a DELL machine pre-loaded w/ VW, a year or so ago. Also, VW tech support provided some good information re choosing a PC.
