  1. The "Vectorworks 12.5.3" folder in my "Applications" folder does not contain a "user data" folder, nor does my "Vectorworks 12.0.0" folder (my Vectorworks 12.0.0 application works).

My coworkers do not have a "user data" folder in their Vectorworks application folder and their applications are working fine. One coworker is working on v12.5.3 and another on 12.5.1

  2. In attempt to update VW 12.0.0 to VW 12.5.3 with the updater, I receive a "Resource Manager Error"

    These are my installation steps:

    1. I'm updating Application Version: 12.0.0.; Series A license; products include Fundamentals, Architect, Renderworks

    2. downloaded "Updater installer for 12.0 or 12.0.1 Macintosh (revised 11/09/2007): 318.1 MB found at http://www.nemetschek.net/downloads/fundamentals/version12/12.5.3.php

    3. created a back-up copy of my "VectorWorks 12.0.0" folder

    4. mounted the "UpdateToVW1253.dmg" file

    5. read the "read me" file

    6. opened the "Update VectorWorks.app" file

    7. went through "Authenticate, Read Me, Licence, Agree to Terms" steps

    8. selected "VectorWorks 12.0.0" folder to be the destination folder to be updated to 12.5.3

    9. installation window runs for approximately 15 minutes

    10. window popped up "The installation completed successfully" with an "OK" tab on the window. Clicked "OK"

    11. open "applications" folder

    12. open the newly updated "Vectorworks 12.0.0." folder

    13. the "get info" command on "VectorWorks.app" file shows Version 12.5.3. (80532)

    14. open this "VectorWorks.app" and a window opens saying "Resource Manager Error"

    15. upon clicking "OK" tab, another window opens saying "VectorWorks could not be launched because of an unidentified critical error. Check that you have enough memory."

    Note:

    1. My backup copy of Vectorworks 12.0.0 still works. All other applications work fine. Computer works fine. No problems at all.

    2. I ran into this same problem a year ago in trying to update 12.0.0 to 12.5.1. Nemetschek ended up sending me a disk copy of the update to use. That did not work as well, so I've been using 12.0.0 ever since.

    3. My colleagues have not had any update problems, however, I'm the only one on the iMac Intel Core Duo

Any ideas? (let me know if you require any more information)

  3. I installed Vectorworks 12.5.1 from the installation disk. Again, everything seems to install fine up until I actually go and open the application. I still receive an error that reads "Resource Manager Error". I still have a working copy of Vectorworks 12.0.0 on my computer, so I can keep on working in the meantime.

Note: I wonder if this has anything to do with the error I'm receiving... I have an unrelated (maybe related) computer problem where I have to reset my printing system everytime my computer restarts. My "print & fax" system preferences do not remember my printers, which means I have to add the printers I use every time the computer restarts. I have not thought this may be a problem because all of my applications still work fine, including Vectorworks 12.0.0

    Any clues?

  4. I did not get the "Resource Manager Error" with the original installation (assuming you're refering to Vectorworks 12.0.0.) of the disk.

I have uninstalled, deleted preferences, emptied the trash and reinstalled Vectorworks 12.0.0 from the disk. The disk installation is successful, the updater appears successful, until I open my newly updated 12.5.1. (refer to my post listing installation steps).

  5. Thanks Katie. Ok, I'm calm and cool now!

I tried it again and recorded all of my steps:

    1. I'm updating Application Version: 12.0.0. (49891); Series A license; products include Fundamentals, Architect, Renderworks

    2. downloaded "Updater installer for 12.0 or 12.0.1 Macintosh (revised 1/19/07): 309.6 MB found at http://www.nemetschek.net/downloads/fundamentals/version12/12.5.1.php

    3. made a back-up copy of my "VectorWorks 12.0.0" folder

    4. mounted the "UpdateToVW1251.dmg" file

    5. read the "read me" file

    6. opened the "Update VectorWorks.app" file

    7. went through "Authenticate, Rad Me, Licence, Agree to Terms" steps

    8. selected "VectorWorks 12.0.0" folder to be folder to be updated to 12.5.1

    9. installation window runs for approximately 15 minutes

    10. window popped up "The installation completed successfully" with an "OK" tab on the window. Note: the mac wheel was still spinning as well when this window popped up.

    11. open "applications" folder

    12. Note: "Vectorworks 12.0.0." folder is still named "Vectorworks 12.0.0."

    13. open this "Vectorworks 12.0.0." folder

    14. the "get info" command on "VectorWorks.app" file shows Version 12.5.1. (65397)

    15. open "VectorWorks.app" and a window opens saying "Resource Manager Error"

    16. upon clicking "OK" tab, another window opens saying "VectorWorks could not be launched because of an unidentified critical error. Check that you have enough memory."

Fortunately my "VectorWorks 12.0.0. backup" folder is still in working condition, so I don't have to reinstall. Please let me know if you have any ideas. I'm running OS X 10.4.8.

I'll email you the "InstallerLog.txt" file if you want.

  6. When I installed 12.5 update in September, I had a "resource manager error". I was hoping the new update would solve this. I downloaded the 12.5 updater today (updater for v12.0 to 12.5) and it appeared to install fine (like last time). I go to open my new vectorworks and I still get the "resource manager error" and Vectorworks won't open. Once again I have to waste time, reinstall v12 and explain to my boss that I got paid for the past 2 hours for doing nothing.

    Please help.

  7. Good points. I believe that the software is only as good as the user. I'm hoping this thread will at least give me some tricks and tips when using Vectorworks!

I don't think it makes sense for me to list things that I think are better developed in ArchiCAD vs. Vectorworks... this is a Vectorworks forum - I'll be assasinated!

I'm currently working for a firm that uses Vectorworks. It adequately gets the job done and I try to use it to it's fullest potential. However, in my experience, preparing architectural type drawings, I just find ArchiCAD a more enjoyable & superior product that is in a whole other league of cad products. Ideally, Vectorworks would borrow some great ArchiCAD ideas such as layer & class management, and their seamless publishing system. On the flipside, I wish ArchiCAD would be like Vectorworks and steal great ideas from Adobe products such as the simple Align tool!

  8. When I resize as you describe, it seems to scale, not stretch. I want to stretch 2d objects. When you say "resize cursor", do you mean the symbol that appears when you are in the 2d selection tool when you are on a node?

Refer to the image in the link below to see what I'm trying to do:

    ftp://markbuffone.com/sample2.JPG

    A = original

B = resize as described in the last post by P Retondo

    C = what I want to do

(pink lines - group, black lines - not in group)

  9. I'm trying to understand what you are saying:

    Is this right?:

    - select all

    - select 2d reshape tool

    - click and hold mouse button for the starting point of my stretch area

    - release mouse button for the end point of stretch area

    - the cursor changes to a selection cursor (black arrow)

    - click and hold mouse button for start reference point

    - release mouse button for end reference point

This stretches all 2d elements but leaves the grouped objects unmodified. Am I missing something here?

    for sample, refer to:

(sorry, I can't figure out how to show image)

    sample.jpg

    A = original

    B = using 2d reshape tool

C = what I want to do (group stretches as well)

(pink lines - group, black lines - not in group)

  10. as a user of latest versions of both Vectorworks and ArchiCAD, here's what I suggest:

    - prefer 2d drafting like the old days on tables... use Vectorworks

    - prefer 3d drafting, properly coordinated drawings, design benefits of 3d modelling, saving time... use ArchiCAD

As an unbiased cad user, there is no comparison. Vectorworks is a good program, as is AutoCAD. ArchiCAD is a whole other level of drafting. I find drawings created in ArchiCAD are much more accurate. Since you are actually building the project as a model, all questions that arise during construction phase are answered in the design phase. Some users find this to be a pain, but as a technologist, I find this to be great... the ablilty to prepare a set of drawings and have the project built as per the drawings! The only downside to ArchiCAD that I've experienced is there are more changes during the design phase because you actually see what things will look before they are constructed. However, any client would appreciate this since it would reduce changes during the construction phase... we all know how painful those change order quotes are!

  11. Is it possible to reshape a group when not in the group? ie/ ... an elevation drawn with 2d objects (lines, rectangles, polygons, etc) created with groups and symbols (windows, doors, hatches, etc) requires an adjustment in floor to floor height. From what I understand, this requires a few steps... 1. reshape lines not in a group or symbol, 2. reshape groups, 3. reshape symbols.

I guess my Vectorworks wish list includes an on/off toggle switch for groups & symbols when a global stretch is required. (things like this make me really miss ArchiCAD)

  12. I downloaded 12.5 updater from http://www.nemetschek.net/downloads/fundamentals/version12/12.5.php , ran the install, and received an error "resource manager error"

Also, now my VW icon in the dock has a "?" over it. I tried the install over and over into the Vectorworks 12 folder and it repeatedly gives me the result: "Your version of VectorWorks was checked against the most current version available and no updates are needed at this time."

    Any ideas?

  13. I use both Vectoworks and ArchiCad... everytime I have to print 100 page millwork drawings to .pdf from Vectorworks I say to myself "I miss ArchiCad".

The key to ArchiCad's success that needs to be adopted by Vectoworks is the ease of printing and keeping track of revisions. Printing an up to date set of drawings (any number of pages) in ArchiCad takes no time at all.
