  1. I would like to request anyone interested in reviewing and commenting on the latest home design OVE has completed using Vectorworks Architect. A positive critique would be helpful to spot any errors in technique we are attempting. Who knows there might also be something we are doing that may be of help to you.

You may reach plans and VW database (zipped) at http://www.optimumve.com/downloads.htm

You may send any comments via this post or to:

  3. Ole,

I have also had this issue specifically with projects started exclusively in v12. The fix I found was a post by archoncad in NZ (thanks Jon) and it worked to restore several large projects that would have otherwise been lost to the great abbiss of corruption. Jon used workgroup referencing to link to the corrupt file and once all design layers were brought over you break the link and save the file in another name. All the design layers were intact less the corrupt data, however none of the sheet data was saved and missing design layers without data will not be brought over.

This seems to be a problem which occurs randomly and I have not been able to identify what I am doing to cause it to happen. It has occured at different times inputting walls, windows and framing. There is something unstable in VW. I sometimes have recieved the blue screen of death when I exit VW after working in a large file...twice I have gone to reopen the files after the death screen and they have been corrupt. This situation has given no warning.

    SAVE....SAVE....SAVE and Re-save.

My motto here is save the job...save your job. The control-S keys on my keyboard are warn off.

  4. Thanks for the input....

One thing VW needs to do is add 1', 3', 5' and 7'lengths to its script file so the system will pull 10', 12', and 14' purchased lengths at the graphic creation level. The sorting is simple once you determine what has been counted from the objects.

Does VW allow manipulation of there locked scripts. I could get in there and write the code to correct the missing pieces.

  5. Typically Joists and Rafters are purchased in specific sizes such as 8', 10', 12', 14', 16' and so on with the shortest length being 8' and the longest dependent on availability of the material. When you frame a floor you may have pieces that are smaller than 8' which than must be added up to equal a purchased size. That being the case you would start minimizing your choices with the smaller pieces to a base minimum size of 1' which is divisible into all of the purchased sizes. If you begin to add up all the pieces which were smaller than 1' you could come up with say a 16' purchased quantity. This will make sense when you have several pieces at say 4'-9" which will round to 5' and when added up will pull from 10' purchased stock. The file which holds the standard lengths and pull stock needs to be available for modification so the user may adapt availability for specific location. VW can sum up the base sized pieces and worksheet formulas can calculate and sort to optimize the purchased quantities.

Here is how it optimizes...5' pieces add to 10' purchased lengths, 2' pieces add to 4' which add to 8' which add to 16' purchased lengths, 3' pieces add to 6' which add to 12' purchased lengths, 7' pieces add to 14' purchased lengths. All of this can be accomplished with very simple math calculations in VW

Response and action would be appreciated.

Could someone let me know how to look into the VW script files and verify the math calcs.

  6. I have been a residential home designer since 1989 using CAD programs from ACAD to BCAD and all in between. VW has by far got everything necesarry to build the model and document the plan.

One thing which I am sure has been addressed is the inability to create a multiple object wall. What I mean is to create a wall that contains multiple objects that can be manipulated individually...such as sending the siding face down to cover the floor deck. It would be great to have seperate "Z height" function of individual lines in the wall object...say ballon frame the framing up and keep the sheetrock at ceiling level.

This would also give the ability to track materials to individual lines within the wall.

    Any input/disscussion would be appreciated.
