  1. I want my 2d image (mapped to a 2d poly) to be visible behind my 3d objects on the same layer.

However, the image always appears on top of any 3d objects when rendered in its own layer.

When placed on a separate layer and layer linked the 2d image disappears with only the 3d visible. This is in top view.

Is it possible to have 2d and 3d images rendered together with the 3d on top?

  2. Thanks, I have looked at both of these but am struggling with the scale of the image.

I exported the lines from VW to Photoshop. Created my image and then saved as a bmp. So I thought the image would be the correct size.

However, the size seems very random in create texture and instead of being 1:1 it now has to be repeatd numerous times to fit the image. It has even rotated. I've tried changing the attributes but can't get my head arround the method of scaling at all.

Applying the image to a 2d poly results in the image being 4 up and I can't see how to adjust this. Thanks for your help anyway.

  3. I have imported a photoshop image into a layer. It appears in colour fine.

I link layers and using both open gl and renderworks the bitmap image does not show.

How can i get it to show as part of my rendered image please?

I have not created the image using renderworks - which is the only reference I can find in the 'help'.

    Help!

  4. Looking at my layer set up box. My layers have varying z and +z heights! I have not set these to anything but 0! The file I am using is a detail taken from a previous file. I have deleted a load of items to make the file smaller.

The original file does not have these changes in z height at all!

    The heights vary from z 2095 and z+ 190.5 to z 0 and z+ 0, with variants in between.

Could this have been caused by the several crashes I have been having? (I am presuming the crashes have been caused by the file size - hence I am producing detail in a second file.

VW says that the +z = the thickness of the delta layer. I have taken this to mean the hight above ground level. Am I wrong?

    This is incrediblt time consuming!

  5. I've drawn a 3d rectangle on the ground plane on one existing layer. Copied and pasted it in place into a second layer.

With all layers and classes visible and aligned it lines up perfectly.

Change to layer link (all layers)the rectangle is now floating in the air in the second layer!

Is there a layer height over-ride or something that I may have enabled in error!

  6. I have several layers. They are all set to the same ground plane. When all visible in top or side views and layers aligned they all line up perfectly.

I need to use a layer link to view together and render. When I do this, several of the layers are floating in the air by several meters!

This is a garden with house model. There are no storeys and ebery thing has been drawn with a zero +z height.

    What is going wrong?

  7. I'm back to working in 11.01 but have had a similar problem with a large file.

After several crashes (probably due to file size), I've found that generic solids have disappeared or, once, been recreated as 'failed solid additions'. These have disappeared from saved files and from the back up files. I save regularly so thought i was going mad!

I had used generic solids to make the file size smaller.

  8. It's me! Ignore what I said. Just looked in layer link and have same problem! Must have moved things accidently - still doesn't explain how some views still line up, but I'm getting there!

  9. Since reading these comments I've just tried the model tool for the first time.

I first aligned all of my layers and checked their z heights etc. in front and right views. (This is a garden design) I also aligned layer views.

When I produced my model two of the layers aligned beautifully with each other but appeared like a magic carpet of plants above the ground surface! At least 1m off the ground at an estimate.

What have I done wrong? The effect was just as I wanted except for this tiny problem!!!

  10. Numerous times I have needed to escape a long rendering time - usually when I've clicked on something I shouldn't. I've pressed the escape key and every other key I can think of that works in other programs. Is there any way of doing this in VW. I use Renderworks a lot so this is pretty vital!

    I work on Windows 2000.

  11. I have used the change working plane to align to a vertical object. I have then tried to revert to the previous working plane (the ground plane) This works in top view but when I use the menu for the other views they still seem to refer to my created working plane.

This also applies when I try to use the set 3D view command. I had previously been able to site a view from inside my model now, when I select this command and draw in my view line, the view created still seems outside of the model and I get get inside.

It also looks in the opposite or apparently random direction when set diagonally.

I have been using the working plane palette to no avail.

Anyone any ideas to correct this please.

  12. Hi all,

I have a Laurel hedge placed on a curve - say a 45? arc. This has the top shaped into an undulating wave.

Any ideas how I can produce this for a 3d model? Is a solid subtraction the method to take? I'm struggling to get my head around the multiple shape and plane aspect.

Help would be much appreciated - especially as I have other 'topiary' items to reproduce! Perhaps I should make them all cones!

  13. This is the same problem that I was having. Converting polylines to 2d polygons and then 3d polygones/contours produces thousands of data points. I've found that if you use 2d polygons to start with you can more or less create a smooth curve with far fewer data points than with polylines. However, the error 20.1 still occurs on a regular basis.

I think the confusing issue here is that it is not ideal to use your original refined 2d model to create a 3d as it is likely to be too complex.

  14. Are there any preset conventional hatches or patterns available for topsoil, subsoil, concrete, hoggin etc.? This is for section details and specifications.

The create hatch module is very hit and miss and I can't find a way of scaling the patterns at all.

I've checked out some of the 3rd party sites and can't find anything that appears this simple.

I can create them in Adobe illustartor but can't can only bring them in as an image file.

  15. Is it possible to produce a mass vegeation shape for a 3D model. No problem in 2D but I can't find anything similar for 3d. Individual hybrid symbols take an age to render and there aren't many shape options to reresent a gebneric shrubbery for example. Also a bit concerend about the printing time/potential problems.

  16. Thanks Robert, I've tried to do this but everytime I try and update the DTM the program crashes. I know I have too many vectors but, as I've managed to create an acceptable DTM from my polylines, I don't really want to have to recreate it from fresh.

Is there anyway I can change the view of the existing 3d model for the dtm without doing an update? Lynda

  17. Is it possible to have a 3d view of a DTM that doesn't show all of the connecting polygon lines?

Ideally I'd like to just show the surface lines.

I'd like to be able to produce a view of the 3D model in wire frame with other elements in place. The connecting lines make this impossible.

Your previuos input has been invaluable. Thanks to all.
