Thanks for posting the texture, but unfortunately when I try to use it, VW crashes.

I was able to get it into my file, but when I tried to change a class to the texture, the file crashed. Is it for VW2015?

  2. I am having trouble getting a site model to display the way I want it to.

I have created the model from surveyor contours and boundaries, and assigned it to a class I call Terrain, which has solid fill and a Grass texture. The problem is that the sides of the model (used to be called the Hull) show the same texture, in spite of me assigning the 3D sides/bottom (in Graphic Properties) to a new class with solid fill and its own texture (asphalt, I just want something like a dark grey).

I have updated the model, I have restarted the program, but the model still shows grass sides.

Is there something I have missed?

  3. I had few problems going from v12.5 (much older than v2010) to v2014 and then to v2015, but I upgraded my iMac first.

My guess is your computer is struggling, so I recommend you replace your computer first, you'll have native 64 bit, and get the maximum ram, and with a Windows machine get the best video card you can, then try v2015.

  4. I have had some odd crashes since updating, but once it crashes, the screen says the file is being sent to Nemetschek.

The crash seems to happen shortly after I open a file, as though "saving every 10 minutes" isn't working and something gets overloaded.

I also had a string of crashes when I was trying to do something as simple as adding a pattern to a rectangle. Weird.

How are you intending to detail the window opening? If you model the opening the way it is going to be built, then your renderings should draw correctly.

I don't think the standard tools allow for deep reveals (someone please correct me if that is wrong), so you may have to do something like introduce separate brick walls to represent the brick reveals.

Could you please add a signature to your posts? It makes it much easier for other users to respond.

  6. I have finally taken the plunge and bought a new iMac running OS10.9.3 and VW2014. I have migrated all my files over to the new iMac, but haven't opened any in VW2014. I have only opened VW2014 to set up a preliminary template.

VW12.5.3 does not open on my new setup so I have not installed it.

I have 3 projects in production at the moment, 2 in the sketch plan stage and one in working drawings. I am going to complete the working drawing one on my old iMac and in VW12.5.3, but what about the other two? There are a whole bunch of new textures that I want to start using, so I am tempted to just open them in VW2014.

Much of my work is done by operating off previous projects - I duplicate and rename the file, then amend it for the new project.

Since the advice I am seeing and hearing from all quarters is not to change programs mid project, what do you do when you upgrade?

Thanks for that - it is in fact what I'm doing already.

I make PDF's of each sheet within VW (via Print, which I think only Mac can do), export them to the job file, then email them direct to clients for them to take to a copy shop for printing. These PDF's open automatically with Adobe Reader not Preview.

The latest version of AR allows for adding a signature, which is a great idea.

  8. I wasn't offering my standards as a solution to your problem necessarily, but the default indoor lighting level you are using is perhaps wrong for external depictions, and I have found that the ambient light level of 35% is too low, so maybe the default levels are affecting the elevations and perspective in different ways.

  9. dm, great idea.

It could also be the way to treat wall components, so each component would have attributable values and behaviour, say for instance if the outside component was weatherboard (sidings) then it would start 50mm (2 inches) below the timber framing component.

So VW would work with real world materials and construction techniques instead of abstract concepts.

  10. Sorry I didn't convey the point of my story very well - the computer peddler was telling us that MS was now so big that the only sensible alternative was to go with numero uno.

It was the same story a while ago with Blackberry in the cellphone market, and Autocad in the CAD market, now it's Revit. The strategy is always to claim, once you have a sizeable share, that your way of doing things is now the industry standard and everyone has to do things your way, and either buy their product, licence it, or die. It sounds overwhelming for a while, but somehow something happens along the way and the threatened monopoly never quite materialises.

I could be wrong, and I frequently am, but I am picking that Revit's attempt to control BIM will go the same way.

  11. Yeah, I remember being told some years ago that the office I was was in should dump our Apple macs and move to Micro$oft running on his particular line of PC's. Funny though, I can't remember the brand of PC he was pushing because it is long gone, and Apple - well, we all know Apple is doomed!!!!!

    Welcome to the forum!

I'm still running v12.5.3 - what do you want to know?

It would also help us to help you if you could add a signature like Ray's and mine. Go to My Stuff at the top of this board and Edit Profile.
