  1. can the piping tool be expanded so that pipes can be drawn with vertical pipes, and the entire run of pipe be calculated for estimating ? (Currently, in VW 2009, it only allows horizontal pipes ... and the 90 turn up elbows don't actually show an up or down element when shown in 3D)

Another idea ... if the "extrude along path" tool could be manipulated to operate using the piping runs, then we could have 3D images of the pipes in a building, with the true diameter of the pipes instead of a line representation. That might help eliminate conflicts during construction.

(PS: i know I can draw vertical 3D nurbs lines to allow for the 3D isometric construction drawings, but it is cumbersome and not easy to manipulate ... and doesn't allow for calculations)

  2. please elaborate ... is a SLVP a "section line view port" ? When I try to place a section line on a front view, it immediately flips the view to "top plan" as soon as I click on the section line button so i can't draw the section line across the front view. Is there antoher way to draw the section line ?

  3. how can you turn off the colors in the default plant symbols ?

That is .... I would expect the symbols to turn into black lines when I check the document preferences to be "black and white only" but many symbols don't turn into black lines and keep their fill colors or gradient colors. The only 'work-around' I know is to print it on a B/W laser printer ... not a very sophisticated solution.

  4. if you had "random plant rotation" checked in the OIP, it seems to rotate the items every time you adjust any setting .... so it is doing the calculation every time ..... and it doesn't do it very fast ... hence the spinning beach ball of death.

  5. Bob-H ..... thanks for the tip, but I can't save my .mov files to .m4v type using QT unless I buy the "pro" version. I guess I'll have to decide if my frustration is worth fixing for $30.

PS: I had QT Pro many years ago ... I might try to ressurect it ... I think it is QT v5.

  6. I've tried making plant symbols and it seems to be hit and miss (mostly miss). In particular, I can't figure out how to manipulate the classes in the 2D graphics so that the feature "enable 2D plant rendering" shows the graphics I wish. Does the "outline" feature use the class "plant-component-bloom" or "plant-component-outline" to generate the extra outlines? I tried manipulating the "outline" class object to no avail.

Is there a source for information about how to make good looking plant objects and how to make them work with the OIP features ?

  7. I thought I'd register one disappointment .... the latest newsletter had a video tutorial on making animations. The video was so simplistic it was of little help. I've struggled with animations (off and on) for years and the manuals and other support forums do not teach this issue well. There is little or no documentation for picking the right compressors or showing how to speed up rendering times or even somthing as simple as getting the aspect ratio and screen resolution correct.

Nemetschek: please improve documentation for animations. Also, QT panoramas are very useful but hardly mentioned in the manuals.

Also: has anyone run across this problem ... you try to send a Quicktime animation to a client, and the client can't open it because his IT department won't allow administrator access priviledges, so he can't download and load QT ? Very frustrating ...

  8. I have a viewport with 3 layers and one is set to be gray in the viewport layer control. The gray layer shows wall with components. When I print the sheet, the components of the walls (brick hatching) shows up as gray, but the outside wall lines show up black. I've adjusted the gray layer percentage on the print dialog box with no affect. What am I missing ?

Is this a bug or operator error ?

using VW Arch 2009 Windows XP

  9. Can anyone tell me how to generate a texture that gives the properties of a translucent solid color ? .... that is ... something like frosted glass where some light will come through, and the object itself will appear bright (as compared to regular glass where all the light goes thru and the object doesn't "shine" or appear bright. (is there a standard texture like this in VW 2009 resources ?)

    Thanks .....

  10. I've been making the mistake of saving my own symbols and textures on 2 different files. Each file has about 75% of the same exact resources as the other file. Now I want to have only one file, and I want to combine the files without losing any of the resource symbols and textures. Is there an easy way to do this without having to individually import each symbol/texture/resource into the 'final' file ?

  11. Matt: you confirmed my suspician about software (rather than operator) error. After I posted, I found the export didn't work well when saved to a server, but it was OK when saved to desktop on my hard drive. Thus, I have a 'work-around' but it is still mysterious.

  12. I had to export a ktichen layout from VW2009 into a VW 2008 version. I did it, but when I tried to open the file in VW 2008 it said it was an "unrecognized file" . Does anyone have any sugguestions as to what went wrong ?

(PS: for several reasons, I did this layout in VW2008 but discovered the cabinet drawer and door handles did not seem to work properly in VW 2008, but they do work in VW 2009. So I did the ktichen in VW2009 then exported .... without success).

  13. I'm trying ... no luck .... I picked the SL viewport, then picked 'classes' in the OIP. I picked each class (Wall-Component-Int/Ext/Structural) and put an 'X' in the 2nd visibility column from the left. Picking 'preview' it shows only the outer lines, with a solid white fill. Then I selected "Wall-Exterior" class and picked 'edit'. In the 'Edit Classes' dialog box I picked a solid fill color black (or any color), then clicked OK. The result is the same .... a wall with black outlines and a solid white fill color. What am I doing wrong ?

(I checked "advanced Properties" in the OIP for the Viewport, and if I do as listed above, I get the same result if "show wall components" is checked or not.)

  14. I need more instruction ..... for a test, I made a component wall, then made a sheet layer viewport, then I found I could show/hide wall components in the SL viewport. However, I could not figure out how to make all the components be black fill in that particular viewport. Am I missing something ?

  15. thanks for the response, but .....

I'm missing something ... I never use WGR, but if I did, won't the referenced file show up the same as the target file ? It seems to me what you're suggesting is to just make another file and change all the wall atttributes to what i wish .... but then, if I make changes, I'd have to change two files. I was hoping for an easier method ....

  16. is there an easy quick way to make the walls in a 2D construction drawing become solid black fill ? I frequently want to make a poster size graphic of floor plans for "non-construction" people, and want to hide the wall components. I know there is a preference for hiding the components when the scale is less than ___, but when you do this, the walls are always white fill. I want black fill to show up better.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

  17. does anyone know how the 2D plant graphics function works in relation to the "edit plant definition" dialog box ? I tried to make my own 2D symbols, and when using the 2D render settings, I can't figure out how to control the outlines (select from 'none' or 'one outline' or 'two outlines'). It is a secret, I guess, since it isn't in the manuals. I think it has something to do with the class assignments for each portion of the graphic, and maybe with the fill. One example .... my 2D tree outline had many vertices, and when I rendered it using the "enable 2D rendering" mode in the OIP, the outline was a highly aggitated squiggly line, much like you can get with the plant outline or vegetative outline. I could not control the amount of "squiggle". Another example... the fills of trees, when colored, sometimes disappear when the document preference "use only black and white" is selected, and other times the color shows up when the "black and white only" preference is checked. I'm puzzled.

    thanks for any help ....
