  1. I need help. I'm trying to understand how to frame a floor. I draw a slab object, then go thru the menu AEC>Framing>Create Joists from Poly, and pick all the joist parameters. At the very end, after clicking 'OK' the VW help manual says to pick two points to align the joists in the direction I wish. However, in the upper left corner of the main VW window, it says "click to select a point". As soon as I make one mouse click, it automatically draws the joists with orientation from left to right on my screen. It doesn't matter where I pick the point, nor does it matter what the shape of the slab is. It always draws the joists horizontally (in plan view) on my screen. But obviously, sometimes I want to draw the joists in the up-down orientation on my screen. What am i doing wrong ? Why can't I get the option to pick the orientation by selecting two points ?

I have the most recent VW update for VW 2015 Designer.

  2. I could not find the old post, but several months ago I recall there was an issue for VW 2015 where it could not export pdf files correctly if used with Mac OS Yosemite. I understood Nemetshek thought the issue was with Apple, so I figured it might never get fixed.

Can anyone tell me if there are any issues between Yosemite and VW 2015 ? Is there a VW document somewhere that describes any current problems ?

Obviously, I have other reasons for upgrading to Yosemite on my 4 yr old iMac and I just want to anticipate any problems.

  3. It appears that the decal is only visible in RW. My earlier comment was generated after much effort and visualizing in OpenGL. SO ... it seems to work in RW but not in OpenGL. Is that the way it is supposed to work ?

  4. Can anyone confirm if the decal feature works as advertised in VW 2015 ? I don't use this feature much, but I tried repeatedly to do it today, using the manual and the video tech tip. When I do it, the decal seems to import as a texture, but as soon as I exit the attribute mapping tool, I can no longer see the decal. I tested in on VW 2015 with Windows 7 Pro using both a jpg and png graphic file.

  5. has anyone reported this issue: try importing any pdf file that has "comments" that were added to it after the original pdf file was made. The comments show up after importing it to VW, but when you go to export a pdf, the exported file will not show the "comments".

Using VW 2015, Windows 7 pro, and Adobe Reader ver 11. However, this same problem seems to occur on the Mac version using Adobe reader 10.

If this is actually operator error, will someone please tell me how to correct it ?

  6. I investigated a bit further. Scaling seems to work on some of the image props that are in the default content for placing a plant. However...... try importing the tree image prop type "juniperus Communis". I found that the asymmetric scaling does not work on it (correctly) and you'll be able to replicate the behavior I described in my initial post. I imported both sizes of junipers communis and they both some the same incorrect scaling behavior.

I'm using VW 2015 on a iMac with system 10.9.5.

PS: I might upgrade to Yosemite. Are the pdf export and printing issues resolved for using VW with Yosemite ? (I read about the problems on the forum postings).

  7. I cut and pasted two trees from my very large file and made a small file for you. The small file still shows the same asymmetrically scaling problem.

I am also puzzled as to why this file is so big ... almost 7 Meg and there is nothing in it except two trees and one 3D rectangle (I used the 3D rectangle to match the height of one tree so you could see the difference when asymmetrically scaling the tree. I 'purged' the file and it is still over 6 Meg.

Well .... then I tried to attach the file to this email and your website says there is a limit on the file size of 2 Meg. Now what ?

  8. has anyone besides me noticed that the plant scaling feature doesn't work? I noticed that scaling the 3D plant in the OIP using different dimensions seems to scale the plant in wireframe, but the OpenGL render and the RW rendering modes produce plant sizes that are differnt. That is, the same plant changes sizes when you switch from OpenGL to RW. Am I the only one having this problem ?

  9. I'm frustrated that I can't figure out this simple problem. In the attached image, the upper door doesn't show the wall lines as if it has a threshold. The bottom door shows the threshold (or ceiling) lines. I've been all over the door settings, with emphasis on the class and threshold settings, but still can't find why they are different. I understood that turning the ceiling classes on/off could affect this, but it doesn't seem to be working here. Both doors are inserted plug in objects. Someone please enlighten me.

  10. has anyone noticed the plant scaling using the OIP doesn't work ? .... or am I the only one with the problem ?

In sum, if you asymetrically scale an image prop tree to be half height (but same width) it will render correctly in Open GL but if you switch render modes to RW then it will appear full height. It seems the problem is a little different on the Mac OS than it is on the Windows OS, but either way there is a problem.

Someone please confirm this, so I can stop trying to make my version work correctly. ;)

  11. I think I've noticed a bug and wonder if someone can confirm this .... import an image prop plant, like juniperis Communis and try the OIP asymmetric scaling. What I've found is that the new proportions scale correctly when viewing in OpenGL, but when you switch to Final RW, the tree does not scale correctly. This is annoying, since the same plant will be differently sized depending upon viewing in Open GL or RW.

Can anyone confirm this, or is it just my problem ?

This occurs in VW 2015 using the Mac OS.

  12. in case anyone cares ... here is the world's worst work-around for this problem: I used the render bitmap tool to render (in RW not Open GL) an image of the imported pdf file. Then I cut and pasted the bitmap image into the annotations of the viewport, then turned off the design layer in the viewport. When I exported the pdf sheetlayer, the size is now down to 500K, not 38 Meg.

There has to be a better method to reduce exported pdf file size. Anyone have an idea ?

  13. I reduced the dpi of the sheet layer but that didn't seem to help. The imported pdf file is a scanned document, and therefore the "snap to geometry" checkbox also doesn't help. I also noticed the new feature about cropping imported pdf files doesn't work .... so I assume it must work only when the imported pdf file is made from an application, that is, when it is a scan from a copier, then it is not possible to crop the pdf image. .

  14. need help ... I import a pdf scanned drawing, then I put it in a sheet layer viewport and export a pdf file of the sheet layer. The problem is, the pdf file export size is huge (38 Meg), even though the scanned image is a simple line drawing. How can I make the exported file be much smaller so that I can email it ?

  15. does the roof framer work OK in VW 2015 or is this a known bug?

Every roof I've tried so far has some varient of this ... (see attachment) . The ridge is extended to the overhang, but the main rafters are cut off at the plate and do not extend out to the full overhang cantilever.

  16. when importing a sketchup model, it often leads to a whole big bunch of symbols cluttering up the VW resource browser. How is this affect avoided ?

for example .. I import a car, and I get a symbol for the bumper, another for the windshield, another for the tire, another for the hubcab, etc ....

In one case a house model imported as a big symbol with nested sub-symbols. I converted it to groups, but when that happened, all the textures were deleted. For example, the brick texture became a brown solid wall. Please tell me the best way to import sketchup... without the symbols cloggin up my resource browser.

  17. on one earlier comment you said Quicktime is no longer needed. If using an iMac and if one is trying to export an animation, what type of file is exported ? What software on someone else's computer would be needed to run it ? If using windows, does it export in Windows Media Player?

PS: I agree with other comments on how your participation and input has made this forum a much better and more responsive place to find answers.

  18. I am hesitant to try it, (and don't know how) but can anyone tell me if the cloud services rendering works well ... and fast ? Could i use it to render a quicktime movie animation ... which usually takes many hours ? Can you tell me how much faster ? (If my current movie takes 3 hours on my 27" iMac i7 quad core, how long will cloud services take ? )

  19. is it possible to apply a hatch to a wall so that the hatch shows up on a 3D model in isometric views .... with hidden line rendering ?

If so ... please tell me how. I tried to apply it as I would for a texture, but it doesn't work ... unless there is some preference setting I can't find.

  20. I rendered a bathroom on the design layer in RW, then converted it to a viewport and rendered the viewport in RW. The attached file shows the image from the design layer (used grab to cut/paste) underneath the viewport rendering. Notice the soffit lighting in the viewport is grossly different and the fascia shows the point lights behind it. In essence the design layer renders correctly, but the viewport has problems.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong ? Why don't both renderings look the same ?

(I checked the lighting controls in the viewport. Nothing fixed it.)
