  1. Someone in our office crashed a file (VW11.5, WinXP). Now when we try to open the file, we get the message,

    "The file cannot be read because it was created by a beta version of the program."

    The old stand-by method of using workgroup referencing to try to retrieve data isn't working -- the same message just pops up when trying to reference the file.

    I've never seen that particular error before. Any chance of recovering anything from the file, or do we just have to grit our teeth and start over?

    Any suggestions are much appreciated!

  2. We're having a weird problem in our office. We have a G5 that we use as a server (basically just file storage that we can all access through our network). We've just discovered if a Windows XP machine opens a VW file from the server, a Mac user can still open that file. Once the Mac has it open, the PC can no longer save it, and VW crashes when he tries.

    If a Mac opens the file first, the server "recognizes" that the file is open, and no one else can open it. This is how we'd like it to be from all computers, obviously.

    Has anyone run into this before? And found a solution? It's seems to only be an issue with certain types of documents (VW files, pdfs), and not with others (MS Word documents).

    Help, please! I've posted on the apple support boards, but I know there are quite a few people here who have experience using multiple platforms, so I'm hoping to tap into that expertise.

    Thanks,

    Kristen

  3. Do the trees have a "foliage" class, or something of that sort? Try turning on all classes and see what shows up. Then you can select the items which are not showing up and see what classes they are on.

  4. Kieth, I'd second the suggestion to use extrusions for your site. Unless the site is very distinctive or you're showing acres of contours, I think the DTM is overkill.

    Ole, I?ve given up on using the road tools for the most part. I use pads and fences to modify the site the way I want. Then I paste in place the ?proposed? model symbol into a new file and convert it to a mesh. I extrude the shape of the road and use the Model>Intersect solids command to get a solid that follows the contours of the site. Then I paste it back into my original file and maybe move it up a half inch or so in the z dimension, to get it to show above the site itself. It sounds more convoluted than it is, and I?m having better luck with this technique than I?ve had with the actual road tools. I'd love to hear anyone else's suggestions for dealing with roads.

  5. Turn on database headers. If you highlight a header, you can edit the criteria that that column searches for. Without the quotes, you can type:

    "=c" for class

    "=l" for layer

    "=s" for symbol

    and it will give you that information for each object in the schedule. Look in the manual under "worksheet operations" for other criteria.

    Make sure you save before doing this, and revert to saved after you have that information, because you don't want to over-write your schedule.

  6. You can insert both of them in a wall, position them as you wish, and change the sill heights (or head heights) so that one is above the other.

    I'm not sure what you mean about the keyboard shortcut commands.

  7. It would be nice, though, to be able to assign particular symbols to always be inserted in a particular class. The way the dimensions automatically go on the dimension class.

    It's horrible to discover that you've accidentally inserted all your windows on the plumbing class. I know, it's user error, but it would be nice if you could eliminate the possibility of making that error.

  8. I think the title says it all. It seems that when I use the OIP to set walls to "class texture" they show no texture at all. Other objects (extrudes and 3D polygons) show the correct texture with this setting.

    And walls do take a texture if I set them to the actual texture rather than doing it by class. Is that what I have to do? I like to use class settings whenever possible.

    Thanks,

    Mac, OS 10.3.4

    VW 11.5

  9. Our office has an HP DJ800ps. We've used OS10.2.8 with VW10.5.1 and VW11 without any problems at all. We upgraded to OS10.3.4 (still with VW11) and still have no problem.

    I suppose that's not terribly helpful to you, but it suggests there should be a way for you to solve your problem without upgrading all your OS's. How are you networked to your plotter?

  10. Or, you can import the replacement symbol through the Resource Browser. Make the target file your active file. In the Resource Browser, select the file with the symbol you want. Select the symbol, and click Resources>Import. VW should ask you if you want to replace the existing symbol.

  11. My office has the HP DJ800ps, and I'm running OS10.3.4. I've never tried turning off the color from the print menu (in fact, I don't know where that option even is). I suspect it makes the plotter print in grayscale, so it's not actually that the lineweights are off, but that they're gray.

    But setting "File>Preferences>Document Preferences>Black and White Only" gives perfect results. Have you downloaded the most recent driver for the plotter?

  12. Yes, what Travis said!

    Also, you might find it useful to experiment wtih Tool>Convert Copy to Lines. You can put your drawing in elevation view, use the "Convert Copy to Lines" command, and have a line drawing that I think is easier to trace than an actual elevation view. You wouldn't have to deal with workgroup referencing at all; just cut and paste the line drawing into the elevation drawing.

  13. If you are using VW11, I think that viewports will do exactly what you want.

    Either that, or set up the view you need and use "Save View" (far right button on the bottom of the drawing window) to save it. When you update the drawing again, just switch to that view. I believe it was called "Save Sheet" in earlier versions.

  14. Well, it would be easy enough to just copy them to the new server. But we got the new server because the old server was close to full, and were planning to use the old server just for storage of inactive jobs.

    For now, my workaround will be to just open old files when I want to and save them to a "Discard" folder on my desktop. At the end of the day, I'll just junk the folder.

    Thank you for looking into my problem!

    Oh, also, I just discovered that VW10 files are OK from the old server. It's specifically VW8 & 9 files that seem to disagree with the OS9/OS10/VW11.5 combo.

  15. OK, I guess it's a pretty esoteric problem. With a little experimentation, I've discovered that it's only old VW files on our old server that don't work. Our old server is running OS9.

    VW11 files on the old server work fine.

    Old VW files on the new server (OSX) or on my desktop (OSX) work fine.

    Too bad most of our old files are on the old server. But I guess this probably won't be a problem for too many other people.

  16. I've only been able to get dimensions to export correctly if they were done as annotations in the viewport. When I dimension on the original working layer, they don't export right. It's a pain.

    But I agree that overall, the DWG export is very good now.

    If I open a VW9 file in VW11, I will get a message that the file is being converted to VW11. I am now looking at a copy of the original, only it is in VW11 format.

    This is an unsaved file. When I quit, I must either discard or save.

    This is all normal behaviour to me. Is this what you are speaking of?

    No, what you describe is what I was used to before updating to VW11.5. When I used to open, say, a VW8.5 file, it would open as "OldFileName v11.mcd". I could either save it as a VW11 file, or just close it without saving it as a new file (which is usually what I want to do, since I'm just using it for reference).

    Now, the old file opens with no name at all. The top of the menu bar where it shows the file name is blank, and it's listed in the Windows menu as a blank. I cannot use File>Close or Command+W to close the file. I cannot use VectorWorks>Quit Vectorworks or Command+Q to quit. I can save the old file if I type in a new name. Then VW behaves normally. But I don't want new versions of my old files littered around.

  18. I like 11.5 so far. The new, separate palettes for editing tools and dimensions are good, and it's nice to be able to resize them.

    I've just hit one snag. When I open a file from a previous version of VW, I can't close it or quit VW unless I save it under a new name. I often open older drawings for reference or to copy elements, and I don't need or want to re-save them as v11 files.
