  1. Jim, Ah, thanks for the clarification. Perhaps worth remembering that one then. Many thanks for the help.

    3D Spaces

Think I might already know the answer to this but I'll ask it anyway. Is there a way that you can tag spaces in section viewports? Instead of just adding some dumb text to rooms in section it would be useful if the room name and number were linked to the space. Any ideas?
  3. bcd, thank you! That fixed it perfectly! Before I switch this thing off and condemn it to obscurity, is there anything that it is useful for?
  4. So this is a process question, rather than a specific issue but I will use the most recent attempt as an example. I was trying to create a sloped ceiling following the slope of the stairs but offset 2700mm above. I really couldn't figure out how to get either a slab or wall element to do what I needed (by drawing them and attempting to use 3d-reshape), so I decided I would model the ceiling using the 3D modelling tools. To do this I used the clip cube to create a 3d section through the stairs, set the back wall to be the working plane and started to draw. This is where I got stuck, I wanted to draw a line along the top of the stair risers and move it up 2700mm as a guide for the ceiling line but I couldn't get it to snap to the wall/stair junction. How do I do this, what is the recommended process for using existing elements as guides to model accurately. I have had similar problems in other situations and being a sketch up user Im used to this being a pretty simple operation Any suggestions would be welcome.
  5. Thanks Vincent, I have finally had a chance to try this and I can't see how to get it to work for projections. The windows just won't cut it because it is a separate element.
  6. Vincent, I started using the wall projections so that they would be automatically cut by windows and it would be easy to resize and move the windows without worrying about them. I shall see if anything comes of this thread but I'm starting to think you might be right. Good thing the 3d modelling tools are nice and simple to use! Also thanks for the link, most helpful.
  7. Wes, Thank you for running this through. Just to point out the differences I was using projections rather than recesses, and only vertical elements. The issues were at points the vertical projections ran through the window opening. Don't know if these make any difference or not.
  8. Wes, Much obliged, any good tips for manipulating the plans in the mean time? Turning off the wall projections just leaves some hefty gaps in the walls.
  9. Hello, Happy Monday, As I sort of fixed the problem on the previous curtain walling by tagging it I didn't want to start messing with it again and so I placed another instance of the symbol and took another view. This one was even more interesting, I believe the element of curtain walling in the middle of the building is the line work that should appear bottom left. It does not appear there on any of the design layers at all. Again in OpenGL everything appears fine, its only with the hidden line rendering that it seems to jump several meters back. Another point of note, I tried to recreate this in a new file and could not so its almost definitely something I have done in this file.
  10. Wes, I have attached a couple of screen shots, one Axo showing the window cutting the wall projections and one plan showing the window not cutting the wall projections. I have tried adjusting the cut plane of the 'Feature in Wall' to no effect. As always any help, tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
  11. Hello, Signature duly updated. Not so sure about the file, I shall have to enquire on Monday, (it is officially the weekend over here). On a side note, since I tagged the symbol as a window it displays properly in the view. Something a little odd going on I think.
  12. If anyone is up for a challenge I have a further development on the topic. This one has really thrown me. The storefront style curtain walling symbol mentioned at the start is scheduling as I wish and showing perfectly in plan and elevation viewports. However in Section viewports its performing rather strangely. I have most of my section viewports set to hidden line or open gl background and hidden line foreground render (to show all surface hatches etc.). The curtain walling element of the symbol is shading in OpenGL but not appearing at all in hidden line. (See attached screenshot) So far my testing has revealed: symbols appear fine, curtain walling appears fine, curtain walling in symbols does not appear. and: Doors within curtain walling within symbols appear fine! windows using the geometry of curtain walling within symbols appear fine! So, any ideas?
  13. Today's questions, and the third in the series, has to do with wall projections. I have created a series of wall projections to show cladding joints across the face of the building. I have then inserted some windows into the wall which, in 3D, have cut the projections as planned and all is well. In 2D however the wall projections are appearing in the middle of the windows. The wall is still cut as expected but the projections are not. Has anyone got any ideas why, or ways around this?
  14. Auto Hybrids are fantastic, I had no idea they were there. So ultimately I have ended up creating an auto hybrid so that I can maintain a strong link between the 3d and 2d elements and created a symbol from that for repeated frames. To solve the issue of the structure not appearing on the first floor plan I just moved the structure layer above the FF layer. Should have thought of that earlier really! Thanks Mike and bcd for all your help, its very much appreciated.
  15. Ah I see, thank you. I was really hoping to keep this all as one element to help with future flexibility but it looks like thats not possible. If this is the case I may well split the columns and rafters and add the rafters to the roof layer. Thank you for all your help Mike.
  16. Ah of course, thank you, now you say it, it seems so obvious. It works a treat on the ground floor, it seems as though the 2d symbol is below the first floor slab though. How do i get it to show through on the first floor plan?
  17. Hello all, todays question relates to some trouble I am having getting my plans to look as I want. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. The problem arose when I needed to create a series of portal frames and wasn't content with the way the columns and beams joined in VW. To solve this I custom modelled the frames using the structural profiles available and put them on their own layer. The issue is that now when I want to show structure in my plans it shows the whole frame, not just the columns at the point the plan should cut. To counteract this I created a horizontal section plan but in this view I cannot see any of the 2d symbols, i.e. door swings, stairs etc. As mentioned any advice on solving the problem or accomplishing it a different way would be much appreciated.
  18. cberg - glad I'm not the only one. I have had some success creating a curtain wall, making it into a symbol and creating a window that uses that symbol's geometry. This way it schedules but there is a detachment between he geometry and the data that doesn't seem very BIM.
  19. JimW - 2015 is the version Im using, I did create a curtain wall but then I couldn't find a way of inserting it into another wall. zoomer - Thanks, I did try that but I could not get it to look right in plan. I also have similar issues with windows on this project (they are all in reality to be curtain walling) and creating a lot of small walls above and below seems like I would be asking for trouble down the line. Wes Gardner - Thank you, that works perfectly! I haven't got into schedules much but that solves the problem. Moving on from that is there a way to also schedule elements of curtain walling? (If I should post this as a new thread let me know and I will)
  20. Hello, just having a crack at my first VW BIM model so expect a lot of questions from me! Firstly I need to create a "Storefront like" element of curtain walling to be set within a wall. To do this I followed a VW tutorial and created a curtain, converted it to a symbol and inserted it into the wall. It looks correct, but how do I now get the door that is in the curtain wall to schedule? If I can't is there another method I should be using? Thanks for reading.
