That worked, largely.
I have used a point cloud to create a terrain model of the landscape on two sides of the house.
I have enough points to be able to construct a model of the entire property, but when I do that, the terrain intersects with the house. I can't edit the site model to help me since as I have deduced, the crop won't allow me to cut holes out of it, only adjust exterior boundaries. The site modifiers tool would seem to be the way to go, but I simply don't get how it works. I already know the boundaries of my building which are the foundation walls. Do I have to trace them to create a site pad? That makes no sense to me. Worse yet, when I've tried to create a site pad, it just hasn't worked. I draw the boundaries and then as soon as my polygon is completed, they disappear not to be seen again.
Any ideas? VW seems really powerful but with an interface that is too complex given the sparse documentation they have created.
