  1. Like most software products, Vectorworks is licensed. If someone is selling you a "used" version, they are (in all likelihood) violating the terms of their license. However, it is possible to transfer a license. The seller should contact Nemetschek Vectorworks' Customer service department for details on how to do this: US (410) 290-5114.

  2. The "no codes" files have simple component descriptions. The "codes" files have a MasterFormat product number prepended to the component description (otherwise the same). This can be useful if you want to quantify your walls at a component level and sort out into a worksheet by product code. Not everyone wants or needs this (nor does everyone find the MasterFormat coding system relevant) so we provide the uncoded form.

  3. The addition of Sheet Numbers (which are mandated to be unique) to Sheet titles (which are not) was necessitated by the Automatic Drawing Coordination feature. I'm not sure why you are seeing a difference in the sort order. The sort order may be mandated by the OS (I've seen it change in Finder before in pretty much the way you describe.)

  4. Joerg, I have looked up your bug in the database. Appended to its entry is a note from one of our QA people (Aksenia) that she was not able to reproduce your bug. She notes that she has asked you for a bug file (i.e. a file that demonstrates the bug) but she has not heard back from you. Perhaps her request to you hit your spam filter?

  5. Don, when Peter and Jon are talking about "wall recesses" I think they are talking about Wall Features, which were introduced in (I think) Vectorworks 2009. The Wall Features functionality is dead-simple to use, which is I suspect why they suggest it. That said, you can make a symbol that does not break the wall (by stacking two 2D loci). But if you want a custom 3D subtraction from the wall that leaves the wall surfaces, you'll need to upgrade also.

  6. The Vectorworks Drawing border system allows full user control of date stamping of individual revisions as well as drawing issues. The problem with "automatic" date stamping is that the date stamp function can't read your mind and know when you have completed the revision.

  7. This information is now stored in an XML file:

    [VW_directory]/Plug-ins/Common/Data/DoorPreferences.xml

(There's one for the window, too.)

If you're doing this for a workgroup, you may want to put this (modified) file on a server and put just an alias/shortcut to the server file in this location.

  8. Petri, I don't know that I'd call IFC "geometry-poor." It really just doesn't support parameters. Parametric support is in fact being discussed for a future version of IFC. It's a two edged sword. What do you want: simpler geometry but parameters in a "dumbed down" version that all BIM applications can agree on, or exact geometry and data but no parameters? Each alternative has its advantages. I think there are very good and valuable workflows to be had with IFC-as-it-is.

BIM is one of those "intuitively obvious" topics that people "just get":

"of course! virtually build a building on my computer in 3D!"

...but when you really look at the workflows, exchanging of parametric (natively-editable) models creates more problems than it solves (in my opinion). It's possible to deliver an IFC model as an "instrument of service" without forcing the recipient into a strict intellectual-property-licensing scheme. I consider this a strength and not a weakness.

  9. DWorks, this is what we mean by IFC not being "parametric". You have an expectation of IFC that is just not part of the protocol, at least as the schema currently stands. IFC is about sharing and referencing data-rich 3D building models, not about file exchange from one native format into another.

You can draw with walls and floors in a program (say Vectorworks) and get it into another program (say Revit, ArchiCad) and get accurate 3D geometry and data and semantics (i.e., high-level object type). You cannot edit it as you could a native object.

TIP: In Vectorworks, you can edit the geometry of an IfcEntity object by using the "Enter Group" command and standard geometric editing tools.
