  1. Instead of labeling contours use the stake object, then you have positional control - nice tip.

I wanted to add additional info from the adjoining sites to the drawing whilst leaving the contour info in place before creating any viewports - looks like there is no way to clean up the contours on the long sides where they close up then?

  2. Having made progress with my first site model in VW..

Please see attached, I think I have it right now.

Just some graphical issues I want to fix.

Is it possible to hide the contour lines which extend past the boundary? (particularly where the contours "close"?

And is it possible to manually choose to label some of the minor contours?

And can the contour labels be moved (or property line dimensions) where they clash?

  3. So I've created a basic rectangular site using the property line tool.

I've created 2D polygons of the contours and have created the site model.

Now I want to edit the site by adding spot levels at each corner of the site and at other various locations and then update the site model. The survey input options don't allow for spot level entries. If I use the 3D loci tool the view defaults to Top view and I no longer see the property lines and there doesn't appear to be a height input option with this tool.

It must be staring me in the face - I am all ears

  4. Whilst I trained using Revit I fortunately do not have any legacy needs to consider when choosing my CAD software such as having an AutoCad background. My prior background before architecture was in the graphic design industry using Illustrator, Photoshop etc. VW feels more like a hybrid between Illustrator and AutoCad in its use so is a good fit for me. Plus, as Vincent mentioned, it's reasonable value for what you get (although that is not an excuse for the stability issues mentioned previously ;)

I agree Revit 2012 has little to offer a small one man architectural firm like me. The fact is though, that Revit's price has come down recently (in Aus) so the price difference between the two is not that great. I dont use VW because it's "cheaper CAD software". My main reason for buying VW is because it's the best choice for a mac user.

  5. I agree, for the money VW is a great product.

Its the stability and compatibility issues to which I refer, especially when users upgrade from an older version of VW to 2011 with existing files. To me these are fundamental aspects of the program that must be made right.

Oh, and another question (Nemetschek are you listening?),

Nemetschek is the parent company that owns Graphisoft (Archicad), AllPlan and Vectorworks. In my mind it appears that the last two potentially are products which overlap. I would be interested to know the future roadmap for each of these products. Nemetschek would you like to divulge?

One of the regular posters on this forum made the comment that this forum is where VW users usually express their frustrations and discontent. There are many other satisfied and content VW users out there who don't express their satisfaction on these forums.

On the budget front, in my part of the world, VW is not that much cheaper than Revit. VW is a great buy if you work in the USA though - but I think that was dealt with in an older previous thread.

A final comment though, I am at this point satisfied overall with my VW experience. Fix the stability issues, fix backward compatibility issues, improve and streamline the user interface, develop a line style overide tool for model lines  would make VW an even better product.

  6. Comments from a new VW user (and still a lot to learn)...

As an ex Revit user I'd be interested in your impressions of Revit over VW (from the point of view of improving VW or course ;) )

I personally have found the graphical overides possible in Revit to be intuitive. For example, say I want to tinker with a model's elevation line weights - to build a lineweight hierarchy. Using Revit's lineweight tool it is possible to easily apply changes to a model lineweight, or change it's pattern, without applying any global changes to a class etc. In VW I believe the workflow is to explode the model to lines and make any changes from there?

As a new VW user I am a little concerned with the growing amount of disgruntled members on the forum who are dissatisfied with some very fundamental aspects of VW i.e. stability etc. With Revit prices coming down (locally anyway) Nemetschek needs to address these issues otherwise its game over. Furthermore, in my opinion its especially time for an interface overhaul.

  7. What the heck. I've added it as a wish as you've suggested.

Don't want to sound like a complainer - VW is excellent software but there is two nagging gripes I have with VW - the first is the dimensioning, the second is the lack of a temporary reference planes or lines feature.

  8. I believe the dimensioning tool could be greatly enhanced with the following feature:

When using the dimension tool and creating a line (or string) of dimensions, after creating the first string and moving on to the next string, the subsequent strings of dimension would "snap" at a set distance apart via a control in the OIP. This would greatly streamline the process and would bring productivity in line with Revit's dimension tool.

As a new user of VW this lack of functionality in the dimension tool was almost immediately noticed. And any time saved in dimensioning........

  9. Ok so what I've done is this:

Create my own Dim style and given it a 8mm witness line length.

Using your technique i can then set an offset from the adjacent dimension line and / or object to place the dim where I want it.

Thats kind of what I wanted to achieve, thanks.

Nice if this would be automated in some future version though.

  10. Hi all,

Stuck on my VW dimensioning workflow.

Coming from a Revit background dimensioning is a no-brainer, the line of dimensions automatically snap at a set distance apart adjacent to the preceding line of dimensions.

The witness lines don't extend from the object being dimensioned halfway across the page.

I'm missing something here right? Why does the dimension workflow seem convoluted?

The pic might explain a bit better

  11. Don't know if there is a simple fix for this but:

I use the full screen mode all the time.

    When I close and re-open I have to re-select >Use Full Screen Mode>,

I've used the save palette option but has no effect.

    Any ideas?
