  1. Ivy Bridge processors come out in April - they will have USB 3 controllers on the chip. I personally wouldn't buy anything Apple now without USB 3. Having said that though, the iMac will probably be the first to get the Ivy Bridge processor.

Apple seem to be dropping the ball with the full workstation option.

  2. Well, the fact you've been given an AutoCad for Mac licence basically answers your own question doesn't it?

    You could:

    1) Stick with ACad and with your limited funds upgrade your PC

    2) Sell the ACad licence and upgrade your VW 2008 to 2012 (you have missed out on a lot of VW's recent development if you currently use 2008)

    3) Go back to hand drawing ;)

I have formed the view, that if you run CAD on a mac, you inherently give up some of the ability to collaborate effectively with other consultants in the windows world.

If you are a mac guy, you only really have two options - Archicad and Vectorworks. (I haven't included Autocad for Mac because in it's present form it is a general cad app and not aligned towards architecture, from what I understand i.e. Autocad Architecture not available on mac)

Archicad's interface for mac is appalling, although a closer competitor to Revit than VW.

If Revit came out in a mac version then it would be goodnight nurse for VW.

BTW, I've used Autocad and I never have liked it.

Download VW 2012 and try it out.

  3. A question for the pro's...

Do you dimension in the design layer or the annotation viewport / sheet layer?

I prefer to dimension in the design layer because when editing the drawing, I have all the dimension info handy.

  4. Wow, John Meunier, you've practically done all the work for me!! I'll buy you a beer next time I'm in Vancouver - I visit BC often.

Because I need to edit this detail (I need to draw a return wall with a different mosaic border) Benson's method is probably the better suited method.

I could probably draw this up in Revit more easily, but since I now use VW, time to get out of my comfort zone and get into extrudes.

Thanks to both of you, I'll report on my progress...

  5. Hi all,

Not sure how to approach this but I need to redraw this graphic (and alter it a bit) in VW.

I would appreciate any tips on what would be the best way to go about it.

I'm waiting for JP's modelling book to arrive, but I would think an EAP?

  6. No doesn't for me, although one of the default walls that come with VW renders the components - all settings appear to be set in the wall style itself (not by classes)

    Maybe a bug?

  7. Open it, make any adjustments to the file i.e. set page size atc atc and save as template.

If you save as template it gets saved into the templates folder. Alternatively you can save a copy of your template to the standards folder, from there you can inport classes that you want. Select Classes

  8. Just wanted to know what fonts are you guys using out there?

I'm looking for a sexy sans serif font to give my drawings a stylish look.

Also, are there any autocad fonts available out there? (OTF format only please)

  9. I've hit a brick wall...(no pun intended)

I've created a brick veneer wall style with individual wall components - all graphics controlled by component classes. (see pic)

    In plan all is good.

In 3D I want to control textures using the wall component classes.

I also want to see component separation in 3D.

However, when I render the texture is taken from the Wall Style Class.

Insertion options are set to use component textures (see pic)

I'm obviously missing something very small here - it's the last barrier before I finalise my template.

  10. You probably know already but to answer you...

But are you talking about introducing WALL COMPONENTS into the fray?

You will need to create/control wall components for some walls if creating construction drawings

You're talking about setting an "outer skin" component to become visible or invisible in different views?

    With walls we can:

    1) Turn parts of wall on and off i.e. outer skin vs inner components

    2) Turn classes on and off in viewports. These classes include those we have created for our wall components. So one class say for "external walls" another class for wall component called "wall-brick" Gives us a high level of control.

What if I want my walls to have NO COMPONENTS? Just a double line!?

Why not create a new wall style with no components?

Or if I already have very specific components where the exterior surface must be visible in both plan view and elevation view?

If you create the wall with all components and graphic attributes applied then all should be good in plan and elevation, no?

If so, then you're not just talking about applying different classes. You're talking about fudging the drawings with visible/invisible wall components. Yes?

Two distinct and separate ways of controlling graphics - which method you use depends on the outcome you want to achieve.

  11. Is there something particular you want to achieve?

My goal is to use my custom class standard and to:

    * Not have all classes load on file opening (as per my previous screenshot)

    * My Classes are used only when objects and symbols are inserted into the document - navigation palette is only populated with classes that are used.

    hope that makes sense
