Unfortunately I would still go with a Wall Type for each variation of the wall, however to make this process a little faster make sure the Wall Components that have different colors are Classed. Then I would create a class for each color or material you are going to need ie. CMU-paint-grey light, CMU-paint-grey dark etc. Then when you need to have a new wall type just duplicate it and assign the correct class to the correct Wall component. ( I agree there will be a lot of wall types but I think once it is set up you'll get quick at it and the advantage is you can quickly tweek a wall or material and the changes show throughout the file. An added advantage is you can override certain materials in VPs for presentation purposes because they are classed.)
Presumably you'll create a library of wall types in time that you can use without needing to create them each time.
Good luck!

True, i've had my ranting days, however that was a couple of years ago.
Are you working on an old template imported to 2015? If so chuck it and start over with a clean new file!
Yes it sucks and we've been harrying them to make migrating to new versions better, sounds like it's coming in 2016.

Not something I am experiencing, max once a day on Windows (a little too often I think but not as catastrophic as yours.....)
You using files created in older versions? Or templates created in older versions? Any imported dwgs or other imported 3D geometry? Does it crash on all files or just one?
(ArchiCAD, Revit (had a crash today), Bentley etc all crash sooner or later )
(Far less crashes on a Mac though for most of these apps in my experience)

OK guys thanks to you both, I had this problem again:
https://techboard.vectorworks.net/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=42266&Number=210439#Post210439
and thought it must be the plug-in however the problem wasn't the file name but the fact that it was a SKP 2015 file, got it to work after I retrieved my SKP plugins from the Waste .

OK this is irritating me, is there someone that can help me on how to navigate the Vectorworks homepage to get to the download of the latest SketchUp plugin?

I would like to see an enhancement of the Chamfer tool so that it is possible to have 2 different setbacks along the subsequent axes/planes.
(When creating masses for buildings it is very common to create the roof by simply chamfering the top edges, however at the moment this is limited to 45 degrees, alternative modeling to achieve this is cumbersome in relation to what is needed.)
I would subsequently like this function to be ituitive, ie. once an edge(s) are selected simply move the cursor from one side of the edge to another to switch the setback sides in combination with a live preview. Also a checkbox for equal setbacks would be logical.

No worries Jim I'll wait and see

Has any special attention been paid to Standard Naming and Auto Classing?
-
Has the migration workflow from version to version been given some attention or is it still going to be a manual process?
Attention has indeed been given.
Now that I like!

Another call for Window and Door Types. Just like wall types - it would be great if you could configure a set number of doors and windows types and then select them from a drop down list.
Yes! asked for (already in 2012!)
-
I find the best way to do it is to use the native door/window plugins and then use those to create a symbol with, this way you have a clear list of the different types and any change you make to one type shows in all the instances in the file. (The only down sides are you need to have different types foannotation etc added in the symbol that is wider than the original hole object will make the hole in the wall larger.....)

+1 (when ever I use them my files become slower than molasses!)

Oh yes please +1
Having to reshape the second wall shouldn't be necessary.
......or stairs or roofs or slabs or 3D geometry etc.......
-
-
Another advantage of dividing the wall into 2 sections one on top of the other is that each wall section and it's windows will show up correctly on the respective plan views.......
-
It would be a versatile and powerfull improvement if the 3D Wall Hole Component in windows/doors/symbols would have the capability to cut holes in all walls (and other geometry) that lie completely or partly within their reach.

Energos Energy Analysis
Energos is an intelligent energy analysis module based on the Passivhaus calculation that’s built directly into Vectorworks software, allowing any architect to make critical building performance decisions based on real-time feedback from a building model with a minimum effort to define energy values:
Any news on thermal rendering?

Please let's stop mousing around , just want to stress the importance of this one!!

Tekla has a free IFC checker too....
