  1. You should be able to change the CR setting in your present props.....i don't know how you created them but i'm guessing you created a polygon and gave it a material that is an image of the prop you want....if this is so you have a symbol of it in the resource browser somewhere, it also means you automatically have an image of the prop in the same file in textures, right click the image and choose edit, you can now adjust the settings as you like.

  2. Thanx Linicks (and everybody else) for the response, even though money is important, my experience is that having used many of the current CAD/BIM programs to the max of my computers capacity (visualization) that if rendering takes a minute longer every time you earn you're money back very quickly by having a computer that is a little faster or more stable, the same counts for bugginess. Also user friendliness and pleasure are very important, if you spend 99% of your working day behind a computer you want to keep frustrations to a minimum and you want be pleasantly surprised once in a while, in this i can say that Windows doesn't do it for me, and having read all the responses here i am inclined, as i was before, to go for the Mac.

  3. Well....VW, Photoshop and ArchiCAD take up 98% of my working day :) so in that sense Mac is fine, i lied a little about traveling it's more that i take home my computer everyday....i travel but don't use it that much on the way ;) so weight and size are the most important in this case...

  4. I've just found out that i've been using ambient where i should have been fiddeling with diffuse, i've never gotten my contrasts the way i want them to be.....try that, remember that you can adjust settings for ambient in both the image and in the render mode.....

  5. Anybody know if it is possible to create a U3D pdf from VW2009?

If not, possibly something for the future!?

I know that it is a dead end file format and perhaps not very useful for larger products but when working with private housing it's a very useful tool for quickly presenting an idea for clients....most people already have acrobat on their computer and it's small easy to send with email and fairly easy to understand once opened in acrobat.

  6. I've had only little experience with Mac but what you say is what i was inclined to believe :) plus considering these programs, VW, PS (which i use most) were both initially Mac programs this doesn't surprise me, thats why i would like to make the move to Mac. Thanks for the input, it kinda confirms my opinion.

  7. It's soon time to buy a new 15" notebook (i travel a lot), i would really like to move to Mac, just wanted to hear from those people that have experience with both PC and Mac, any thoughts or tips?

I've browsed quite a lot of forums, and it seems Mac is as prone to crash as PC however Lenovo/IBM seem to be the most stable?! Appreciate any advice!

  8. I agree, i would prefer VW to be more 'stable' and lag behind somewhat in new 'functions' compared to the other apps.

Let the other program developers do the dirty work and let the chaps/gals developing VW steal the good ideas and build a stable, functionable VW instead. I haven't been using VW that long but it seems to be becoming somewhat less stable than before?! (ie VW 12 vs 2009) 2009 almost feels like a Beta version, more hiccups and inconsistent small irritations(bugs), (nothing large though ;))

  9. Anyone know if it is possible to move a hatch pattern inside the appointed area. ie i have a fasade with horizontal paneling however the lines of the hatch pattern representing the paneling are not at the height i would like (ie lining up with windows and doors)? Can i move them?

  10. Elliptical in plan.....curved walls work to a certain degree however as soon as you have to adjust the space there's quite a lot of moving and joining to do...preferably you would just want to adjust the ellipse axes.....it's strange i seem to remember boast and showing my collegues the it is possible in VW (in an earlier version) and not in ArchiCAD?!

Is it possible to draw and elliptical polygon? I've tried but not succeeded, otherwise i could use the create walls from polygon command.

  11. There is another option for using other views as a 2D trace.....if you create a viewport of the view you want to use as a trace in a sheet layer, you can then convert this viewport to lines and copy the contents back into (an empty) design layer just becarefull with the scale change between sheet and design layer......the only problem is it doesn't update accordingly ;).

  12. I use Archicad and VW parallel daily, don't start over estimating the capabilities of ArchiCAD :), I think the discussions on this topic the last few days have been interesting and reasonable but in my opinion these programs are fairly equal, each with it's pros and cons. It'll take a while longer but all programs that i've been involved with (ie. Bentley Microstation, ArchiCAD, Revit, VW have the last decade in some degree been 'stealing' each others latest pros for every new version. I don't think you should be too critical when it comes to VW, for the price they ask they deliver top of the line cadware.

  13. Hi Guys!

Having worked with first AutoCAD a couple of years, 5 solid years with Bentley Microstation Architectural and now 2 solid years of ArchiCAD, parallel to this VW (which i purchased privately) i have quite a good idea what they all stand for. After having read all the (heated) discussions on this forum, lately mostly about BIM and workgroups, I feel compelled to react. Mainly because EVERYONE! is looking for the answer to what program they want to be devoted to, as do i and forums like this often give a clearer understanding of the pros and cons, even though i have tried to stay away from committing to this discussion of comparison, i now feel compelled to throw in a few opinions even though i think it is a discussion on the same level as that of choosing between Mac and PC - very much depends on 'feeling' either you like it or you don't, problem is you have to work at least a year with a drafting program to get the 'real' feeling for it, not so easy when facing the big (economic)choice.

Personally i see myself more as a designer/artist than a technician/drafter, this definitely influences my opinion. AutoCAD i hate, Microstation is far to complex for it's own good (but don't get me wrong could already 5 years ago do far more than all the others can now!), ArchiCAD is a good straight forward drafting tool for architects doing large projects, however has limited 3D modeling capabilities outside regular walls, slabs, windows, doors etc. (for example, i haven't even found a straight forward extrude tool (yet)) , VW i would rate very close to ArchiCAD both in capability and feel however i find 3D modeling in VW, dare i say it, far better than AC.

At the moment everyone at my office uses AC as do i, however when it comes to doing fast 3D presentations and photomontages nothing beats VW, thats what i turn to. Generally i find AC more pliable doing straight forward drafting in large projects, however VW is more superior when it comes to graphics, both in 2D and 3D.

Having said all this I think that except for the price these programs are very similar! Again the choice i think depends on feel, i prefer VW

When it comes to comparing the BIM capabilities between these programs it's still far to early to make any kind of reasonable judgment because frankly i think we've all just got started and all these programs are headed in the same direction all be it approaching from different directions. So far the largest unsolved problem is compatibility, everybody is still to dependent on dwg. IFC is a start but also this is far to premature to be effective.

There you have it, remember this is my opinion, based on NORMAL use of these programs over time, I'm only an ordinary architect that enjoys using the currently available drafting tools, even though i am forced to use mainly AC daily i take every chance i get to use VW because i simply prefer the feel of it.

  14. I receive updated construction drawings in dwg regularly, to use them as a trace reference i import them into their own file in VW with a specific name, i then create a referenced layer viewport on an empty layer with them in my own project, this enables me to update the external file regularly while keeping all the settings i have in my own file (and keeping my file much smaller with less classes). Problem is when i zoom in closer than say 1000% while in my active layer and the referenced layer greyed (or lately showing but at 10% opacity which i find gives better graphics) the referenced layer disappears, i can still find snap points but don't see the lines? Any ideas, is the referenced file too large? This doesn't happen in other files with the same setup?!

  15. What i would like.....is it possible? I would like to undo/redo 'stuff' without the view changing at all, either way, i've tried with all the choices in the Preferences/Session window but even when i choose the option Undo View Changes: Never the view still changes in certain cases? Why? Is there a way to switch it off completely?

  16. There's some very creative solutions here however having suggested earlier simply to use 'send to back/backward' in Top/Plan view on the soffit element (assuming ofcourse that the element has a fill), i'm starting to get worried here have i missed something...doesn't this work?
