  1. Well i've had a look, i can't see anything strange with it, it opens and regenerates as usual?!

I even created a pdf of your sheet from ADT (I have ADT 2007) and it came out at a little over 0.5 Mb?!

I don't know what version of AutoCAD they are using, or what they are doing but it seems to me the problem is at their end.....as it so often is :) ?! I hate and have always hated ACAD...if it's any consolation.

Sorry i can't be of anymore help.

  2. Thanks... that's how i do in now :) , thing is i work with the plan as a trace for facades and vice versa so i work on both at the same time....meaning i have to change opacity from 15 to 100% every time i edit or draft on the other layer.....but i'll survive.

  3. A possibility could be symbols.....if you use a lot of symbols perhaps this is tough for ACAD? Try decomposing the 3D symbols when exporting.....however i must agree with Mike it's probably the fills, hatches and gradients.......it would be easiest to figure it out if the consultant uses a copy of the files to erase elements that could be causing the file to be so large and see if they become significantly smaller?!

  4. Sounds good orso! Has your boss thought about letting the PC users work on Mac with windows?...on the other hand why not just let everybody use what they want? Working with both Mac and PC to the same server isn't a problem anymore, is it?

  5. Ha ha thanks Marcuskolb, i think you just confirmed my sentiments exactly, your situation seems to be rather similar to mine (except that i haven't taken the step yet), you mention that aesthetics are secondary, not to me though :) ...very important! Not if it costs the shirt of your back of-course but none the less...funny about the stickers i just removed the ones i had on my HP :) (though it was more to tease my boss who is going to buy me that Mac! than a worship thing.)

  6. Anyone using Windoor 14? I was just wondering why it is so that when i have the door/window ID checked the shim gap is not shown in plan view and when i uncheck the ID the shim gap shows? Is there a way to change this setting ie. show or not show i both cases?

  7. OK, i don't want to lock horns with you about this anymore, i guess we'll have to wait and see what NNA next step is, personally i have always liked using the reference system, in all CAD programs. But i also see the benefits with a single file system.

Just to make sure you understand this Visual Compare tool properly, basically it is the same as in VW when you have 'grey others' with the added function of dragging a bar across the screen which hides the 'others'.......staying on the same issue i have added to the VW Wish List the possibility to manipulate the look of the 'grey others' in VW, at the moment i prefer to use a Design layer viewport with the layer set to 15% opacity because the graphics feel superior (i don't like the pixel or dotty feel of the grey others at the moment).

A minus with AC, you can only have one trace/reference/layer visible at all times, VW at least gives us the option to grey/show as many layers as we want.....

  8. Well Christiaan, you use words like "ArchiCAD absolutely wipes the floor in this regard with a feature called Visual Compare." I don't see how. You seem to suggest that it is a tool for keeping track of changes in a file...this is incorrect.

"Simply release"..... means simply that nobody else can edit that part of the file until it is released to another user, i consider that approx. the same as being "locked" for other users?!.. ..however all others can see and use this part of the project as a trace.

I think you over estimate the capabilities of ArchiCAD compared to those of VW, sure each program has it's pros. but they are very similar in their capabilities.

  9. Sorry to burst your bubble but Visual Compare is only a visual gadget to 'hide/show' the trace/reference in the active layer...!!!! By dragging from one side, top or bottom the screen you hide the trace, nothing more.

I've used it on several occasions however it's essentially just another fancy way of hiding the trace/reference file....

  10. But in essence you do lock a certain part of the file to one user even when you 'override' through an administrator you still lock that part of the file to one single user all you're doing is changing the user?!

  11. This is perhaps a very obvious one but then at least someone can answer it...:) When changing a wall thickness in the OIP is there a way to let the change happen relative to one of the outsides? At the moment it happens relative to the centerline?!

  12. You can discuss this as long as you want but the bottom line is you need (as it has always been even when drafting by hand) a project leader/administrator with an overall view on the latest updates and what goes where in which layout, be this in a single file setup or in a single layout file reference setup or in a multi file reference file setup........if you think AC's single file system is good great, we kind of got the picture.... if you prefer WGR system fine too!

Perhaps the program that first comes with a clear administrative tool too keep track of changes and updates to every file or bit of a project (if this isn't already in place) has the advantage.

  13. Quite right.....from Graphisoft?s own page:

With ArchiCAD's innovative and award-winning TeamWork concept, teams of architects can share entire Virtual Building? models and their documentation sets across a network without hassle. TeamWork relies on the compact Virtual Building? file, so design teams can divide up parts of the building to work on, share changes with their colleagues and view what team members are doing.

Ideal for firms and projects of any size, TeamWork is simple to set up and use. All building information remains stored in ArchiCAD's object-based team project file, while teams are coordinated and controlled by an easy-to-administer management system.

When a project file is shared, team members simply 'sign in' to the project over a network and define a workspace using a combination of stories, layers, sections, details and layouts. Stories can even be further shared with the use of the marquee tool. A satellite of the project is then created on the team member's computer, eliminating dependence on a live network. At any time - by network - team members can send changes to the master project and receive changes that others have made. Team members can send and receive single elements, and can add notes and mark up elements in each other's workspace.

However this means that that part of the project is 'locked' to anyone else trying to edit it and the main file is still in one place on a certain server.....

  14. As i have pointed out before, i use VW and ArchiCAD parallel, unfortunately i've only used ACs Teamwork briefly so my experience with this is limited however i know how it works :) .

In general ALL projects with several people involved, not only in cad programs but even when still drafting by hand, demand a lot of planning and coordination, and is always dependent on a good dialog between project members.

Apart from the advantage? of having all information in one file (easy to find), (a disadvantage would be that everyone in the teamwork group must work from the same location/server!), the only advantage over other setups i see with the single file AC teamwork setup is if members of the group often change, in this case it is perhaps somewhat easier to introduce new members to a project because they can find all information in the same file and perhaps get a faster overall understand of the project.

Otherwise i think it is more a question of taste and i'm quite sure that if a large amount of people using VW point out that they prefer the 'single file project sharing method' that VW developers will introduce this possibility in the (near) future ;).

  15. ...NOW i see :) ....for everyone that hasn't discovered this (yet).....in your workspace ie tools>workspace>workspace editor>keys you can set Mode Group keys....what these do are this: when ever you select a tool, most tools have a number of options that appear separated by separators at the top of the screen in the menu bar, each appointed key in the Mode group toggles the settings of these commands respectively. For example if you call these Mode Group Keys 1, 2 ,3, 4, 5, 6 the 1 toggles the command options before the first separator, 2 the commands between the first and second separator etc.

  16. Are you sure you have imported them into your file.....it's possible to have them visible in the resource browser but that they have not been physically imported...you have to right click on the texture and choose import. Sorry if i'm assuming you know less than you do ;) .

  17. Don't know about everybody else but i have "Use floating databar" and "Allow numeric keypad entry for instant data bar activation" selected and as soon as the data bar appears i enter a value and it appears in the first field of the data bar without having to hit tab first! Very useful!

  18. Another useful tip.....under view>lighting you can adjust ambient settings for the whole view, as well as inserting a 'sun' ...which is basically a directional light (good to know: if you do this more than once you get several 'suns')
