  1. I know there's a brannew version out, so please disregard if this has already been handled. It's all up in my mind at present, and I wanted to write before I put it off again.

    I would like:

-Viewports to be virtual borders around drawings they're showing (mine show as rectangles vaguely related to size, surrounding maybe part of the drawing shown, offset either vertically or horizontally)

Ok, so my plans behaved as I wished, and the cirucumstances above related to my elevations. But I was using layer links, cuz I didn't know that the viewports were that slick. Now I'm just using the vp, and it's much better. So that part is squared away. Ooops. :)

-Viewports to be "polygons" that are 2-d shape edit-able for the "crop" function.

    - Can we eliminate the crop-edit thing? Drawing a square (with an invisible line) around the desired bits in an edit window is just not intuitive. Cropping the drawing by editing the viewport borders is much simpler.

-Drawing labels related to the viewports. Ie, drawing labels show name of viewport, page viewport appears on (per the sheet layer number?), scale of viewport...

If this stuff is impractical to the function of the program (or already integrated in a way I've not yet discovered), I'm open to learning why. :)

    Thanks...

  2. Is it just me, or does VW randomly change bits of drawings?

I'm working with a model. I had set all the windows to show opening direction in 3d, but the opening angle is 0deg.

I had to swap a couple of wall directions, to put the shutters on the exterior. When I checked the elevations again (2 floor plan layers linked to roof layer for model to show elevations), those windows that were fixed by this action now show an opening angle of 50.8deg.

So I fix it (one at a time, since I can't select more than one window in a wall, YET...grrrr...), and all the windows are "closed".

Today, I open the same file, open the elevations page, and all the OTHER windows are now open to 50.8deg. ??!!?!?!!!?! Where did 50.8 even come from? Particularly since I can't change all the windows at once, and couldn't possibly have accidentally changed all window opening degrees to the length of some wall?

Also..... On my second floor layer, there's a bunch more detail shown in the doors and other 3d symbols than on the first floor layer. When I go to edit the symbol to try to determine which class those detailed bits are on, and I turn off that class, they still show up. It almost looks like I'm looking at the 2nd floor plan in 3D, but it's set to the Top/plan view, it's set to wireframe, it appears to be the exact same settings as the first floor plan (and the symbols are set the same as well). But the legs appear on the stools, and the door handles on the fridge, and the lever on the toilet, the contour lines on the closet rods, and bunches of lines in the door openings that I don't want to show... I'm very confused. I'm hoping someone will tell me of some secret view option that I haven't found yet.

Edit: Aha! It was a layer-link... the primary layer must've been in Top view, thus showing the linked layer in 3d. I'm finding layer links to be a big PITA. I'm glad I figured out how to do the multi-layer 3-d viewports and the stacked layers today. :)

  3. 1. When you edit the title block (from the OI palette), on the Project pane is "Apply these values to all title blocks" checked?

I can't find that option. Is that in the original titleblock edit (from resources, editing the titleblock symbol), or in the file where I'm using the titleblock?

    2. Was the date field added to the record after the title blocks were added to the drawing?

No, I used the date field at the initial creation of the titleblock, before even starting the file in which I used the titleblock. I've used ArchiCAD in the past, and lovelovelove their auto-text functions, so when I found "date" listed in text (number) types, I pulled it. But when I used it, it continually marked all my drawings 01/04/01. And the date on my machine is fine. So I dunno what that was all about.

Now I'd be happy if I can just change the number one time. I'm still having no luck getting the P_ fields to change thruout the file.

Thanks for bumping my thread... I figured I was SOL. :)

  4. Excellent, Peter, thank you... this is exactly what I needed to know.

But now, all those saved views are showing up in wireframe in their viewports, even tho I tell the VP to Render in Hidden Line (these are elevations). The vp boundary line changes when I change it from hidden line to wireframe, but the drawing inside stays wireframe. Why?

  5. If I've set up a drawing with File>Drawing Setup>Create standard viewports, I wind up with several sheet layers with pre-installed viewports and saved views. If I wish to add a sheet after beginning work on the file, the sheet layers and pre-installed viewports show up, but the saved views do not. So I create the views I want and save them.

But... how do I place those saved views "into" the pre-installed viewports? Or otherwise show those saved views on a sheet layer?

I'm just getting back into VW after several years (and versions) of ArchiCAD. I like this new method of sheet layers/viewports (the last version of VW I was proficient on was 7), but I can't figure out how to manipulate it. If I set it all up from the beginning it works great, but adding stuff in is proving difficult for me.

    Thanks...

    -J

  6. Merv - If, after you've established your set with all the titleblocks/drawing borders, you change one P_ field, do they change thruout the project?

Thanks, everyone, for your replies and insight. I've not yet fixed the issues, but I feel like I'm getting a better handle on them. :)

(Oh, and... what does "OIP" mean?)

  7. I'm working with small projects, and would like to run them as single files. I'm starting with a fresh project anyway (which isn't going anywhere until I get this sorted, so I can set up all layers and whatnot accordingly... this will also probly be the template once I figure everything out).

I used the "Drawing Border" function, in the File > Document Settings > Create Standard Viewports. I can change the P_ and S_ fields on one sheet, but the P_ fields don't stay changed for the next sheet. Do I have to do something else in the initial titleblock/border setup to make that all work properly? Can I change the P_ fields before placing the border thruout the document (per creation of standard viewports)?

Should l just place a new drawing border on each sheet (Merv?)...?

I can't see what I've done wrong either, but it still ain't workin'.

For some reason, I've also got one field that refuses to change when I tell it to, even tho the record is attached properly (fixed). Hrmph.

  8. I made one giant record file with many fields (P_project name, P_owner name, P_address, S_sheet number, S_sheet name, etc etc etc).

And I linked all those records to their appropriate text fields on the titleblock symbol.

And I made that the border/titleblock for use in the new drawing file.

And I made a bunch of viewports/sheets, which all have the titleblock symbol on automatically. And I viewed the first sheet, and selected the symbol, and hit the "Edit Title Block" button in the Object Info box. This shows that all my record fields are divided into Project and Sheet. I changed the bits accordingly, closed the editor, and everything was changed on that sheet. yay!

But then I viewed another sheet, and the same titleblock was unchanged in the P_ record fields.

Am I wrong to assume that the P_ fields will change thruout the set?

  9. So, I've made up a custom titleblock.

And I've linked all my text back to the record format I created to go along with it.

In the online help, it says to prefix the records with P_ for project, and S_ for sheet. I'm assuming this means that the P_ records are consistent throughout the entire project (ie, I change them one time, and they are changed thruout the project, in the case of owner information or date) and the S_ records are changeable sheet by sheet (ie, page numbers).

Mine doesn't appear to be behaving this way. I do get the Project and Sheet record editing fields out of the Object Info, but the project fields don't seem to edit over the whole project. Am I misinterpreting the difference (or method of use) between the P_ and S_ records? Have I missed something in the setup/creation of the whole thing?

I do not wish to edit the date on umpteen different pages (I can't get a date function to behave either, but I don't mind typing out the date... as long as I only have to do it once).

    Thanks much...
