[Text Background Colors- Why?]

I've searched the site and can't find a technote or anyone else with a similar problem:

When I write text or dimension, the text block has a colored background (a pale gray) despite choosing "no background". Any ideas about how to stop this?

I'm using VW 9.5.2 and OS 10.2.2

["Clearly" an Extrude problem]

Sometimes when I extrude a shape only the 'z' faces show as solid, The original face of the 2-D object are transparent. If I add a texture to these objects, all sides a filled. Any ideas what might cause this?

[Text is white?]

I just openned a drawing in VW 9.5 and tried to type some new text and it is appearing as white. If I make the text block a colored background then the text is white on that color, but I can't seem to get the text "Black"- Could this be a "Quartz" compatability issue?
