Change the forum sign up process to stop usernames becoming thread titles

line-weight

Question

There are very often troubleshooting threads started by newly signed-up forum users, which have the username as the thread title.

There must be something in the sign-up process that is causing this to happen.

If threads don't have meaningful titles, they are less likely to get responses or show up in future searches by people trying to solve similar issues.

Lately, more people have forgotten to add the Vectorworks version and the computer specs as part of their signature. There is a way to make this mandatory, any concerns?

Definitely make mandatory! Great idea.

What would also be useful, if possible, is an edit button for one's own signature here, so people don't need to go hunting for it in settings to update it:

Agree!

I always have to go hunting to remember where to change it.

(Of course, making it mandatory wouldn't make people remember to update it each time they change VW version or computer)

Based on the title of this thread I think Andy is right. It's pretty clear that the problem is with the 'start new topic' form being too vague.

@JuanP are we able to change this field name from "Title" to "Subject Title"?

Shouldn’t you just call it “Subject” or “Topic” if you are trying to eliminate translation errors?  “Subject Title” seems repetitive and problematic when translating in different languages.

No I think there's a case for keeping "title" or "heading" in the field name. "Subject" or "Topic" could be mistaken for the main content.

There is no good way to do this then because many around the globe would be confused by “title” or “heading” as evidenced by the phenomena which inspired this thread.  Perhaps the folks in charge should talk to an expert on this UI and translation stuff.  That’s what we do for projects we design in other countries 😉

Sure way to get nothing done 😆. Better to change it and see how it goes.

I think @JuanP said at the top of the thread that it was hard coded in the forum software so they can't change it.

What's really annoying is that you can't join their forum to discuss such things unless your an owner of the forum software.

Probably simply enough to change the hard coding but would need to be done after every update.
