Drawing the venue

Recommended Posts

Greetings Everyone.  I am new to the VW world and have always used Wyg.  I find myself struggling with getting quality renders to my client.

All of my clients want realistic renders and that includes drawing the venues with as much detail as I can.

For those of you that build shows this way for clients, are you only using spotlight, do you also use architect for building the venue?  Spotlight doesn't seem to be as good for working with buildings, am I just missing something?

Also, I would like to just use a blank, green surface for the screens and LED walls that I put into drawings, but spotlight wants me to do a texture and I have not been able to find a way to import a blank, green slide to use.  Can someone point me to some video links to maybe help on this?

This is how my renderworks are turning out and I am sure it is something I am missing. The truss shows up as blocks, the pipes on the drape show through.  Just all around seems sloppy.

Thank you.

Hello @AnthWhite, Welcome to Vectorworks. Have you explored the VW video courses in the VW University? https://university.vectorworks.net/course/index.php?tagfilter[category]=27

Some are intro level made by users as presentations as to what VW can do and includes a bit of how to do it. Longer courses/videos dive deeper into specifics. Several speak to rendering and setting up the room itself.

Architect is really just a different toolset. Spotlight has the same wall, door, slab and window tools.  To get high quality renders you should be considering the following...

Textures - You can create your own textures and edit the defaults

Render Styles - You can create your own render styles and are not just limited to out of the box renders.

Lighting - You can use Spotlight lighting devices, light objects, IES lights, HDRI backgrounds, light emitting textures.

Camera - You can create viewports with the renderworks camera tool that can include, bloom, exposure and depth of field effects.

All of this will only look good with a good render style rendered out on a sheet layer with a high enough DPI setting. Your image looks like it might be rendered on the design layer in a shaded render style. To improve the shaded render mode you can select shaded options from the render dropdown.

Late to the conversation here. Realistic rendering is an art form unto itself. There are no magic tool sets. It’s all about attention to detail (what to include, what to leave out, how to “cheat”), lighting, textures and rendering styles. You can produce really beautiful renderings in VWX, but it’s all in the details.

As to including venues, you can see what is already available. For me it depends on the level of client and the potential that I will be in the facility more than once. That determines the amount of time I’ll spend on a model. If you can get decent 2D plans you can go along way in modeling.  Grab all the photos you can from the web and/or in person.  The architect tools available in Spotlight are plenty to get you going. I find I only use the wall and door tools at most and sometimes not even that. I say that because a lot of times it’s far simpler to generate simple geometry with an image texture than actually creating something like, for instance, a door. It will typically look better as well so long as it’s not a focal point of your design. Your renders will be much faster as well.
