Linear Light Best Practices

Question

I have art lights that I want to insert diffused type lamps in for my renders.

Here's what I've done:

  1. Modeled my art light's hardware
  2. Put a rectangle inside of the art light
  3. Converted the art light to a line light

Here's what that looks like:

The quality of light is closer to a non-diffused LED strip light than it is a diffused light.

In order to get a more diffused, uniform look, I cranked up the brightness values, the dimmer and changed the falloff to NONE.

Looks pretty good.

A couple of notes about using these types of lights that's helpful:

  • This help article is useful
  • These lights will only render in Renderworks modes ("shaded" will not work)
  • When you change light settings in the OIP, your entire canvas disappears consistently. Just switch to shaded and then back to your render mode and things will re-appear. This must be a bug!
  • Turning off "render geometry" does exactly that in the OIP.

A little confused that the light still is treated as many individual lights (at least that's how reflections are interpreting it):

Was just dealing with this myself yesterday. Agreed on all the above. I was mocking-up ring light, & could not get the line light to produce  attractive usable output (actually lighting a subject, like irl, not just glowing) even tho I upped the output to something like 500%, so switched to adding another source to fake the output, something I hate to do.

Have you tried using a Glow Texture instead of Line Lights?

Back in 2017, former Vw employee @PVA - Admin JimW had this to say about Line Lights in the thread linked above:

Quote

Line Lights are splotchy and there isn't much we can do to fix it. The object is considered to be deprecated in most cases and I don't think it will be getting any love anytime soon.
