Clip Surface from Hardscape ?

Can any one Tell Me .. I've tried clipping a surface , say a circle from inside a square, and converting it to Hardscape object from polyline but, it won't maintain the inner removed surface. It shows the handles of the inner removed shape but displays a complete enclosing pattern. Is there another way to clip a surface from a Hardscape pattern ?
