Help!! Wall closures just not working

hugobillington

Question

Hi there, I've followed and read through this thread but no matter what I do, I just can't seem to get this feature/tool to work. So this is my first time posting as I'm literally ground to a halt.

So.. I have wall components snapping to the given heights within the 'Stories' feature. This is working fine. I have placed windows within the walls which are recognised as 'Window in wall'. However, no matter what settings adjust, this just doesn't seem to take hold of what it is I've specified within the wall closure settings at any point. This has been enabled and disabled across all the possible locations (wall styles, wall components, then the plugin style settings, and the individual settings). I have gone through every option individually to see what it could be linked to, but no luck. I set up a blank document and imported the wall style and window, which seems to work sometimes and sometimes not. I have used the window tool to drop a simple VW standard window into place. This also doesn't work. There was one way in which I managed to get the wrapping to work for a brief second but then doesn't work at all.

During the writing of this post, I was stripping out the file that is attached. During this, I managed to get this to work again for a brief second;. However, it is now sticking in place, it doesn't seem to have any flexibility, and I can only get this to work on that one window, although it still doesn't want to wrap to insert, only a wall component when I try and insert a new window (the same window) Im back to the start again without this feature working.

Surely there has to be a fundamental issue with something that I can't seem to work out. Surely it can't be this complicated? There appear to be many parameters that enable and disable this tool, and I'm not even sure if Vectorworks Support (Wall Closures).vwxis my issue here.

Ive spent hours attempting to sort his out, and posting here is my last resort. I have attached my file before to shed some light on the issue, hopefully. I really appreciate any help you can provide.

@hugobillington,

There's a bug (that should be resolved for a future service pack) that causes closure graphics to not be created for Top/Plan view if the wall height is not tall enough to include the opening.  Even though your components are tall enough the invisible Wall object envelope has a zero height.  Try selecting the wall and setting its top/bottom heights to something that more accurately reflects its component geometry heights and you should see the wrapping in Top/Plan.

Hi  @Matt Panzer, Appreciate your quick reply. Thank you, that seems to have worked within the stripped-down file I sent across. However, applying the same technique to my working project does work, although there appears to be an underlying issue, to get this to apply to the window directly (Without having to adjust and re-adjust some settings). All the wall styles and components don't have any wrapping parameters attached, this is only being set and changed within the window itself.

Is this likely to be a bug/ glitch? or is it something I'm doing with the parameters that is essentially causing my difficulties? Ive attached a video of the issues im experience. Hopefully this helps, I am happy to share the original File with yourself, but for obvious reasons don't wish to upload to this public forum, is there a way of sharing this with you privately?

Again, thank you for your quick reply really appreciated.

@hugobillington,

From what I see in the file you sent, you're using VW 2022 SP1.  Is that correct?

If so, have you tried it in 2022 SP2?

The issue of the wrapping not showing until you edit the window looks like a reset problem.  It would be worth trying it in SP2 to see if it's fixed in your file.

BTW:  I quick way to reset a window or door in a wall is to select it and use the Move command to move by (0, 0).  This forces the object to reset without changing its location.

As for the Wrap to Insert option:  In this case, the wrapping does not stop at the insert location because it never hits the jamb of the window.  The preview in the dialog is currently a generic representation that does not show shim gaps.  Because of that, the wrapping components do touch the jamb (and they stop when they hit it).

If you continue having issues, please do PM me the file and I'll have a look.

With SP3 released I was hopeful that the wall closure issues might all finally be resolved so we can put them into use.

I have to say I have finally managed to get the component wraps at the closure to work for a window in both Top/Plan and 3D.

...until i introduced a sill.

As you can see, with the opacity turned down the closure wraps are located behind the sill. I have tried adjusting the cut plane but it appears to have no effect. Neither does amending the draw order.

Am i missing something from the multitude of options that can affect the wall closures or the window visibilities or is this the next bug to be solved with this function?

I have used stock vectorworks wall style and window style from the library for testing this as a baseline, file attached.

Out of interest it would also be good to know why the sill colour fill projects all the way to the internal face of the wall no matter the sill settings (We'll leave the need to include an internal sill option for another day)

Hopefully @JuanP or @Matt Panzer know what's up.

This is currently a limitation because of how wall inserts interact with walls.  First, their Top/Plan graphics always show on top of the Wall graphics.  That is why the sill is masking the wall closure geometry.  Second, there is currently no way for a Plug-in Object (ie: Door or Window) to get the shape of the wall closure so it can conform some its geometry to the closure.  This is why the sill is created without considering the shape of the closure.  This is something we're working to address for a future version.

Apologies for the frustration.

@Matt Panzer

Do you know if there is a bug concerning shim gap and component wrapping?

I did manage to set the wrapping as desired in one test file but copying the window to the next file and the shim gap don't  show up

This might also be user error (-; its a lot of places to look for settings ( wall style , Window style, plug in options )

I attached a file with one wall with shim gap and one without, and i can't tell why it isn't showing in both places.

I took a look at your file and the good news is that it's not user error. 😉

The bad news is that it's a (known) bug.  😞

The problem can happen is a component top or bottom of a wall component passes through the wall hole of the door or window.  Moving the insert in the wall higher or lowering the bottom of the component will correct it.  Unfortunately, neither of these "workarounds" are very reasonable but that's all that I can come up with.
