VW 2022 - speed on Apple M1 devices - SLVP updating

Recommended Posts

So far I was pretty happy with the VW 2022 native M1 App.

It needed noticeably less RAM than VW 2021 with Rosetta emulation and I can

open larger Projects now. Everything very snappy so far.

I have a starting project (NDA btw) that is currently not yet very complex, geometry wise.

But I have about 30 instances of a single VBVisual Tree (Ahorn) which M1 Graphics

doesn't seem to like and makes it noticeably slower.

And meanwhile Facade Covering Panels, array copied from 2 single Cube prototype

Symbols, inserted with different scalings.

Either Trees or Facade Elements may slow down VW ARM quite a bit

and even more so for Twinmotion on M1.

But this is something to expect and manageable.

What surprised me is how slow my M1 Mini is for Updating SLVPs in general and

huge amount of RAM usage.

VPs Render mode was Top Plan View for Plans, Hidden Line for Sections and

Elevations.

The first time I hit Update All VPs, macOS warned that I run out of memory and

started closing my Browser Windows. VW was over 100 GB memory usage,

something I haven't ever seen for Updating VPs on neither Intel Macs nor on PC.

So far, new Hidden Line in Design Layer was great and impressing.

Could be that Hidden LIne available in VPs is still only the old slow and memory

hungry version ?

But Shaded Style isn't much faster either and Section Calculation looks very slow

too. Meanwhile I tried update SLVPs one by one but while doing VP changes like

editing Crops and moving them around, VW eats more and more RAM though.

I restart VW now as soon as it rises to about 30 GB of RAM usage.

(In the past, for similar or more complex projects, I never had more than 24-32 GB,

or now 64 GB RAM on PC though)

My SLs are set to only 150 DPI, VPs are 1:200 to fit 1-6 VPs on a single SL in A0 size.

File is sub 300 MB and I deactivated that VW saves VP contents already.

Anybody else having issues with VW 2022 VP updates in general or on M1 in special ?

I will now try on Windows and come back if it differs.

Meanwhile  tested in Windows.

I see exactly the same behavior on PC, slow and huge RAM consume.

So definitely no M1 issue.

In contrary, at least the same speed on such a low level machine.

BTW,

Tree Symbols and such were deactivated for VPs.

But I forgot that I also use some instances of roof Solar Cells, Furniture and

similar from VW Libraries.

Will have to ckeck again without these or dump them down.

I haven't used it a lot for real, but some testing did seem to show that VW2022 was slower than VW2021 for certain things, mainly viewing sheet layers with a lot of complex vports, and switching to a design layer view, again in a complex and large drawing:

(copied from another thread)

Quote

VW2021 // VW2022

Open Vectorworks

40 seconds // 18 seconds

Update several viewports, mixture of hidden line & OpenGL/shaded:

18 seconds // 13 seconds

Open large file (1.17GB) into sheet layer view:

22 seconds // 28 seconds

Then go from sheet layer to openGL/shaded 3d view of design layers, by activating a saved view:

10 seconds // 22 seconds:

Update renderworks viewport

2m31 // 1m50  (according to VW progress bar)

2m50 // 2m13 (according to my stopwatch since pressing update button)

Wasn't the last VGM update to accelerate DL and VP in VW 2021 ?

Looked at it at that time but could not notice anything.

As I did not experience such lagging before I just expected an Apple ARM issue.

I am now happy that it is not.

I see on PC that updating "Shaded" is much faster vs old (?) "Hidden Line" on PC.

And I see that VW 2022 HL runs basically single-threaded.

BTW,

interestingly, beside VP's, if that geometry is good or bad,

with VW 2022 Design Layer Views that geometry works always snappy.

Meanwhile cleaned up/replaced/deactivated all crappy Symbols.

Isn't much faster though in SLs.

Neither editing of VP and their Crops nor updating VPs.

And RAM usage is rising continually.
