# Calculating roofing areas

## Recommended Posts

Does any one know of an easy way to calculate the surface area of a roof face object, for the perposes of calculating tile requirments?

This would be very helpful to me as well.

It seems likely that roof elements have volume data associated. If the volume was known, it could be divided by the thickness to produce area.

Charles, yet one more solution lurking?

Sloped roof area calculators are available in print and on the Web. I too would be interested in knowing if Vectorworks can calculate these values directly.

you multiply the horizontal flat area by percentage factor of the roof pitch.

ie. a bldg 8'x12'=96sqft with a 7:12 pitch (96sqft x 1.158)=111.168sqft roof area.

see "Builders vest pocket Ref. Book" for factors

I found a way to do it. If you view a roof face from a 3D angle and then trace over it using the 3D polygon tool, this gives you the surface area. When doing this the "smart edge" constraint must be turned off. Or you will not be able to snap to the edges of the roof.

Incidentaly it seems that the ability to calculate roof areas must be a function needed by every architect since the beggining of time, why does VW not have this built in?

first ungroup the roof(s) to roof faces. You can then via a worksheet calculate the volume and thus the surface.

the formula is:

=volume(T=SLAB)/t

where t is the thickness of the roof

hope it helps
