Saving new drawing template!

David Wood

Question

Hi there I am trying to save a new drawing template so that the layer scale is 1:1 when opening a new drawing. I have opened a new drawing and changed the scale of the design layer to 1:1 then saved as template and over written the default one following the file path but when I open new drawing it still has the design layer at 1:50!!! Any help much appreciated.

It depends on where you saved the Template.

The hierarchy how library files with same name will be used is :

User Folder over Workgroup Folder over Program Folder.

If you have saved it in the User Folder, it has highest priority and

potential files with same name in both other folders will be ignored.

This way it should work.

If you saved the Template to the Program Folder Library, and there

exists any other Template in the other Library Folders, they will be

prioritized and it will not work as expected.

Also your changes may very likely overwritten with the next

Service Pack installation.

So why overwriting the default files at all ?

I have a bunch of highly customized Template Files for different purposes,

in my case in the Workgroup Folder Library. Each has its own File Name.

(I used special names so that they appear on top of the Template list)

If you don't use Workgroup Folders, just place them in your VW User Settings

Folder. Just use the same given VW Folder hierarchy as in the Program

Folder library.

Hi there thanks for your reply. I saved it in the folder that appeared when saving the template. There was already a Default file in there so thought it would be the one that VW opens when creating a new drawing?!?. I will try to resave in teh user folder if there are any of teh same folders in there.

Don't know what VW default path would be for saving templates.

As for me it chooses my Workgroup Path.

And are you sure that you have chosen your desired template

from the list when creating a new file ?

I did not find a Setting for which template will be used when

e.g. letting VW start with a new document. I assume it is the

"empty template" - which will not have your presets.

If you want the new template to be the one that opens when starting Vectorworks, then you should overwrite the Default.sta template with your template file but keep it named Default.sta.

Otherwise just give it the name you want and when you select File>new you should get a dialog asking if you want to create a blank document (=Default.sta template) or to use a document template.

Select the document template you want to use, the next time you use File>new to start a new drawing it will remember the last used document template as long as it is set to "Use document template". That way you can use that template as your "default template" for new drawings while using File>new until you select another template.
