Edit surface modifiers, beginner problem

Hi! I'm learning the Landmark through the Landmark essentials tutorial and I'm currently learning the tools for grading. I'm running into a problem when clicking "edit surface modifiers". Basically all my geometry disappears. I can still add some grades (in the dark), but when exiting the tool I can't see them anymore. In the tutorial it seems to be the opposite; when clicking the button all geometry is still visible and when exiting the grading can still be seen. Any ideas of what I'm doing wrong?

Don't know why, but I messed around for a bit and found that the modifiers worked on another hardscape, and when checking back on this particular piece it worked again. Must have been some kind of glitch. Strange though as it was a piece of the supplied files for the tutorial.
