BIM Clash Detection Software Recommendations

Hi all,

Any recommendations/experiences for BIM Clash Detection Software/Platforms such as BIM Track,Dalux, BIM Collab etc?

I didnt list Solubri as it appears very expensive.

As far as I know, for now there is nothing comparable to Solibri office when you need total check control.

BIM Collab seems to want to move into the Solibri monopoly, though. Stay tuned on that.

There is also Navisworks, but than you have to buy into the Autodesk Ecosystem or Desite from Thinkproject. Desite is very powerful and capable.

But so far all these programms are quite expensive.

Has anyone had a look at BlenderBIM clash detection?

Sure it seems a little hands on to set up but the price can't be beat... free.

 

Still wondering if worth the effort of setting up to try it.

I am following with big interest a certain Dion Moult, who's involved into that. He's regular contributor at BulidingSmart forum. His posts are a wealth of knowledge.

I certainly also want to try BlenderBIM as soon as I have some time. And no, time involved into OpenSource is always good time.

I looked at Blender BIM some time ago and was really impressed.

Wanted to look deeper but I was never able to install it again.

Installation stopped with an error message.

Same with newer BBIM versions.

 

Maybe because of M1, macOS Public Beta or Blender Alpha/Beta ....

but I think I wasn't successful on Windows either.

 

But very interested in your experiences.

Currently I was very happy with OpenIFCViewer.

(Until I went to macOS 12 Monterey Public Beta 😉 )

I think I know why you couldn't install it. Blender 2.92+ upgraded the python version. That's why BlenderBIM now has two versions of the addon, see here for the (unstable alpha) daily build: https://github.com/IfcOpenShell/IfcOpenShell/releases

 

Select the latest, under 'assets' you will find the py39 version.

 

For support you will find the main developer (moult) here: https://community.osarch.org/

 

Or you can add an issue on GitHub. Note that the development is still in an early stage. New functions are added on a daily basis.

I am also following him since a while. He recently gave an intersting interview on the trxl podcast (Link). He is also a regular guest on the osarch youtube channel. BlenderBIM has plenty of potential because it's also agnostic to you field of work. I am also impressed with the speed of development for being open source.

In other words dive in give it a try see what works for us, and if we need to spend cash to hit a certain project goal next year well, at least we know.

I am still not able to install BlenderBIM on my M1 Mac.

Probably Blender BIM is Intel only and will not work in a native ARM Blender.

Or just a Monterey Public Beta thing.

 

I am using latest 293 and 300 builds

 

It did not get easy on Windows too somehow.

Did not work for 293 but at least I was able to finally install it on 300,

after 5th or so un/installation attempt.

 

 

And it is nice to see that OpenBIMViewer does run very well on Windows.

I really love it as an IFC viewer.

Unfortunately there is no Clash Detection or other analysis tools inside

as the Thread Starter is asking for. But I thought there are some Open

Source projects out there which are developing such things.

I am intrigued.  I will test Bentley's ProjectWise + iTwin tools out with Vectorworks at some point in the next couple months.

Bentley makes great tools overall.  The cost and small user community and limited training materials have been concerns for me. 

It appears that through this virtuosity platform Bentley is attempting to ameliorate these roadblocks to small firm adoption.

I've tried BlenderBIM last week. Has quiet a bit of a learning curve. I managed to get the clash detection running, but after a while a had some errors regarding python scripts running in the background. It could be a nice free tool for basic model checking. I am also curious about BelnderBIMs capability of comparing an ifc-file against an IDS for validating the data.
