What is the + for near the center of a polygon for?

What is the + sign for near the center of a polygon for?

 

It's not the center since the diagonal lines I have below show the center.

It indicates the geometric centre of an object. It wi be shown when smart cursor settings are set to pick up the centre of objects.

Therefore, this would be the Centroid or center of gravity.

It indicates the centre of the bounding box that encloses the object. Actually, that is wrong. My first answer was the correct one.
