VW 2017 SP5 opens all recent files on start up (slow to start up)

Emerald

Question

Were still frequently having these read only issues ref >

Some users vector works takes a good 2 minutes to open, they normally think this is normal.

However in still doing fault finding on the read only issue we are now doing wire sharks from the server.

I have noticed that when opening vector works, it reads many files as the application opens.

At first we thought it was all the files in "file - open recent", Once opened vector works has no drawings open, it can then be opened and used as normal

The screen shot attached is a filtered pcap, give an idea of what file we see when the application is open.

Test was just Start the mac > open vector works. At no point did we open finder or any other application / utils

Any idea on how we can stop this behavior please?

Environment is VW 2017 SP5 on Hi Sierra for all users

Maybe this is Vectorworks checking whether the 'Recent Files' are still available in their last known locations.

If Vectorworks is slow to open and servers are involved, I would be looking at what Vectorworks resources/library files are located on the server. They will be either Vectorworks 'User Folders' (strongly discouraged to be anywhere except on the local HD) or 'Workgroup Folders' - folders intended for shared/common Vectorworks resources.

There are many operations in Vectorworks that incur access to the files in these folders, including:

  • When Vectorworks loads, including the population of the Resource Manager.
  • Using tools that features the Resource Selector [a focussed version of the Resource Manager].
  • or user actions that read or write these resources.

If the network or the server is slow or busy, Vectorworks speed will be affected.

Shared/common files (working files or resource/library files) can perform better when shared via cloud storage solutions because files are then saved on local hard drives (settings permitting).
