NURBS won't compose

I often have trouble getting NURBS curves to compose with other objects such as lines. The VW documentation suggests that this is supposed to be possible - but is it?

 

By way of example the attached file has two NURBS curves which I'd like to compose together with a line that joins their endpoints, but I can't make it work.

They can be "composed" together using the Connect/Combine tool. You will get several options which can be really helpful. It's definitely worth exploring this tool.

Thanks! This is a tool I under-use. I'll make an effort to explore it some more as you suggest.

So I ran a few tests here, and it doesn't appear that I can use compose to combine a mix of lines and NURBS. I can combine any mix of 2D lines/polylines/arcs/etc and any mix of NURBS Curves. In your case, if I concert the line object to a NURBS (Modify > Convert > Convert to NURBS), compose will also work.

 

 

Based on other 3D Modeling I have done in Vectorworks, I am thinking the plane is causing the issue here. Technically, the NURBS curves are not restricted to a plane while the line in 3D is set on a "3D" plane. If objects are on different planes, this can cause them to not play nice together. --- I think the issue here is that the compose command isn't providing an error in the bottom right about differing planes, but I am not 100% sure. I will submit it to Engineering for confirmation.

Yeah, Alex is correct. Best and easiest way is to simply convert the line to a nurbs curve. then compose. Or....in a 3d iso view you can just select the nurbs curve tool and snap to each end of the two other curbs curves, then compose. Compose is a great tool.  I use it daily. :-)

You are correct. Connect/Combine Tool would be another way of getting them to join properly.

Advantage of "compose" over connect-combine is where you have a whole lot of segments you want to compose into one line: highlight them all, compose, job done (if it works).

 

With connect-combine there would be quite a few more clicks.
