Question

i would really appreceate if i would know what my programm is doing...

for example:

rendering viewports in open GL --no progress bar or any information how long the render takes are you rendering at all

opening a backup file and change view to viewport - pinball and in finder "application is not responding" if i wait several minutes tadaaaah! here i am pinball stopps programm reacts again.

i have a several breaks and waits and no idea whats going on. the status bar would be great if  it would let me know whats going on.

...please talk to me!!;_)

I think it would be UI polite if any action that takes more than 1 second

would show a progress bar.

(That we users can estimate how long it may need and more important

if VW is still working or just frozen)

I think in previous versions VW always had a fixed progress bar in status

bar. In latest versions it seems to a) disappear when not in use (?) and

b) no more showing for all tasks like it previously did and maybe not appear

reliably anymore (?)

I believe the OpenGL status bar disappeared in 2020.  If I remember right, I thought it was a bug on my end, contacted VSS support, and they confirmed that this is "working as designed", given that OpenGL renders very quickly.  Well, not fast enough....

It wouldn't be quite as bad if there was an option to stop the VP update once it was in process.  View->Cancel All Viewport Updates doesn't seem to do anything.  Does it?  I'm training myself to always save before a VP update, so I can force quit VW and relaunch if needed.

VW: Please return the status bar.  Very frustrating.

OK, on Mac,

VW 2020 and VW 2021 seem have a nervously changing multi purpose Status Bar.

When I load a larger file I see kind of progress bar

(with terrible Layout, very contrasty, in dark mode only ?)

which will appear temporarily for things like "Updating References" or "Geometry"

when loading OpenGL.

I think both versions are the same.

Just that VW 2021 caches OpenGL (in File ?) so that 3D View loads too fast that

I could see the progressbar there, opposed to VW 2020.

What really  irritates me is that even the coordinate display (Local/World) isn't

persistent any more (It can even disappear until your cursor re-enters the

drawing view. mAybe even a click needed ?)

Windows test later ...

I just did a little test.  Updating OpenGL SLVP in 2021 mac:

  • No Status Bar (update takes 14 seconds)
  • While viewports are updating can't open menus ("beach ball"), so no way to access "Cancel All Viewport Updates" command to see if it does anything.

Maybe submitting requests actually helps.

I guess not.  Any VW employees reading this to provide guidance?

im am working in VW2021and was hoping for better but... and somehow glad that i am not the only person missing that!

there is a statusbar if you work in designlayer but not when updating openGL viewports ....

actually there is great joy and quite a bit of frustration in working with VW ...

little things like the (too) small ankerpoints are hard to target on screens with high resolution nowadays...plenty of  white screen real estate arround this area...

Looks like the status bar Layout on Windows looks much less problematic.

(No black text on white background with a different height over the status

and progress bar, so maybe a Mac and or just dark mode problem)

And there are more "progress bar" appearances for any kind of action on Windows !

While in VW 2021 Windows, the 3D View doesn't appear in real time like on Mac,

it says "Caching" and needs some time.

I also see the coordinates fields disappearing when a progress bar is active,

like when RW rendering a view.

Even when rendering SLVPs, but not consistent. They come and go and no

overview if they belong still to a single Viewport or the next already.

So no real estimation about how long it will take until all are updated.

TL;DR

For me there are Progress Bars visible on Mac and PC.

(somehow)

I see progress bars in that situation.

Intermittently  ....

There comes a PB for "Geometry" .... disappears ...

then a PB for "Rendering" .... disappearing ...

repeatedly n-times for n VPs ...

until it is finished and the VPs refresh ...

Apropos shy Progress Bars.

Not talking about "multi-threaded" Apps like Modo, where you can open

unlimited amount of setting or resource panels and go on working

or even C4D where you can go on working in your file while C4D is

rendering in Image Viewer.

For any App that is totally blocked when doing a single task until it is finished,

like VW, and you can't interact in any way, it is more than fair that the Progress

Bar appears loudly in the middle of your screen,

to clearly show that you have to wait.

And at that time, block any user inputs until it is active again.

Because otherwise users tend to click around to check if there is any feedback,

which could produce great harm if all those clicks would be executed one after

the other when the App thawed again.

(I think this is what VW would do mostly (?))

Agree 100% and wish someone at VW would chime in so we'd know they're aware of the issue, even if they were to say that no changes are expected.
