VW2021 - Reference Marker Text Scaling

pwolfe

Question

The new plug-in object Reference Markers have a decimal scale function but it's scaling the text size as well as the symbol itself.

Is there a way to control the text size so it remains at a standard size (e.g. 11pt, 12pt, etc.) so we're not ending up with text on our elevation markers that's slightly off from the rest of the document?

@pwolfe Can you clarify your question with a sample screenshot? I'm not having scaling issues with reference markers in viewports at different scale, but I'm not sure if I'm using the same settings.

Here's a quick diagram of what the functionality issue is. This is within Annotations on a standard viewport (although the same thing happens everywhere). The previous 2020 reference marker tools had independent control of the font size in the OIP. I understand that the system has been moved to a plugin style where you can fully customize the shape of the marker. But by tying the font size to the symbol itself, it requires a full rebuild of each marker when a different size tweak is required (to avoid the issue of random text sizes which IMO make any drawings look sloppy).

Additionally, creating our own "standards" which conform to a smaller standard size seems to be an issue because only certain markers can be scaled. The elevation marker for instance, does not have the ability to edit the size without breaking the ability to rotate the arrow in the OIP settings.

It appears that the marker is working as designed. There is a lot of great functionality with the new Smart Markers. I find that in most situations having text scale along with the marker is an improvement. A big advantage with Smart Markers is that they can be saved as plugin styles and applied across a project file. In this situation, I would recommend duplicating the marker style and customizing the size based on the scaling requirements and standards you've set for your drawings.

I've tested interior, section, and elevations and haven't been able to find the issue with rotated markers not having the ability to scale. Hopefully this screenshot helps. Please let me know if you're finding the issue in a different workflow.

Working as Designed (WAD) means that the codes does what the task specification that was given to the programmer says it should do. It does not mean that the object functions the way the user wants it to.

If you don't agree that the specification was correct, you need to submit an enhancement request (rather than a Bug Submit) to see if you can get VW to reevaluate the task and change the behavior of the object.

In this case I would tend to agree with @SMannVW that the text should scale with the markers and the better option from the users standpoint is to create different Styles for different scaling options.

But I rarely use markers, so what do I know.

If you and enough other users see this as a problem it will probably get changed in a future version. Or perhaps you can go back to the Legacy Marker styles by editing your workspace if they work better for you.
