Apart from noticing something odd when editing a mesh object, it seems it is recognizing the parts of the mesh as individual items (notice the two anchor points showing up when selecting, by test gives the same with anchor points) so that if one of those parts falls within the selection boundary it gets selected.

Because the mesh object is basically a group it may as a result of selecting that one part also select the entire group as a result.

With a "regular" group of two 2D objects and covering only one of those with a selection window this does not happen.

Whether my guess about the why of the selection is correct or not, it is undesired behaviour.
