Allow In Place editing of reference resources

Can anyone tell me what this feature is meant to do? My assumption is it allowed me to update a source/reference file within the working file. However that doesnt work.  If I edit a referenced layer the only way I can do so is by using the MODIFY>UNLOCK which then allows me to edit a referenced file, IT DOES not edit or update the actual referenced source file only the working file?  

 

Also if I then update that reference it reverts back to the status of the source file that was never edited? Does this feature not work, or am I misunderstanding its use? @Pat Stanford@Matt Panzer@Eric Gilbey, PLA?  Can you guys point me to anyone who can help us understand this better?

 

Please note we use layer import method. I have no idea if this has any consequence to the outcome? Maybe this feature is intended to work with the DLV method only ??

Instead of importing resources from other files via the rm you can reference them. You aren’t referencing the whole file. It’s not layer or viewport referencing.

 

i think this is what the setting means by “referenced resources”.
