dimensions - what am i doing wrong

how do i just draw a 'dumb' dimension on an annotation layer that wont affect my drawing layer items if i move the dimension on the sheet ? 

 

it keeps associating the dimension with the object and i find it really annoying when i want to set up a nice looking sheet

infact, it would be great if you changed the info on the design layer and it changed the dims on the sheet - i'd like to retain that. 

specifically i dont want the placement of the dim on the sheet to have any consequences for the design layer item it responds to. is there a way to do this ?

The way to stop dimensions automatically associating themselves to the objects they dimensions is to turn off Associate Dimensions in the Document Preferences.

 

If you want to remove the association for a specific dimension, then select the dimension, right-click on it and select Disassociate.

do you find its useful to have them on? i guess it feels kind of like bim, but it generally ends up being more of a pain to me than using the old fashioned method

Personally I keep the association function turned on. The constraint markers (little green boxes) tend to remind me that the dimension is associated. The Right-click command is very helpful though.

And for your other question, there is no way to do a "one-way" association.  So, you can't associate a dimension so that it will adjust if the object is changed but the object won't change if the dimension is changed.

Personally, I leave the setting off because unless you are only using basic entities throughout they fail to associate.

This I find to be true for 3d objects, entities which have been grouped, PIO objects, solids that have been edited (add, subtract, section, etc.)
