Fence to have Gate/Door ability

There's no way to insert a gate (Door) into a fence. Particularly if you want a fence TALLER than the gate. Doors should insert into fences like they do walls.

@Don Seidel agree with the sentiment in terms of having the ability to place a gate like a door.

 

I am increasingly moving towards a BIM workflow for conceptual work and rendering along the way.  A true landscape BIM workflow which incorporates design objects would be nice.  Right now so much of BIM seems to revolve around standard construction and rectilinear geometries, forcing us into using auto-hybrids for anything that is a little different.   I would love to be able to take my custom modeled gate, throw it in a gate container object, and then be able to get it to behave like a door in a wall (hinge points, swings, trimming the wall or fence it was placed into).  As the project matures, being able to add hardware, operators, etc would be great.

 

I challenge the developers further to create a special gate object that lets us copy in our highly customized 3D surfaces for the gate geometry.

I agree with the above.

Some time ago, I posted a query about the location of settings which control which side the gate opens in a fence. The answer was that doors only work in walls :(. So basically the door/ gate I use within a fence/ railings object is a fake, just for illustrative purposes. I find it disappointing.

I also hope the developers will take our calls into account and rectify this omission.

@jeff prince, what you mention is absolutely right. At the moment, there is plenty of options in the door editor. Inserting custom design door/ gate leaf should not be an issue.

You can fake it:

- Set the door leaves to look you want via Settings or import custom 

- set Jamb Width & Depth to Zero

- don't place in a wall (place walls on either side) or place in a wall of equal or LESS height

 

this way you can render them open if you want, with no header.
