is there really a way to generate the site model from the geolocation tool?

Recommended Posts

Maybe Vectorworks will step in here, but here's what that looks like to me:

•The base image is from the initial GeoLocate choice.  It is cropped with the Geoimage tool - drag a rectangle, click at end point to highlight, click the Select tool to accept.

•The Site Survey is an external dwg file prepared by others, rather than some magic tool to extract contours and survey info from the geoimage. The dwg is imported into the vwx file via drag/drop.

•Same for the building - drag/drop or reference the ifc file into the vwx drawing.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it until better interpretation shows up.

GIS Shapefiles with elevation contours, property lines, building outlines, etc are available for many areas of the world from local/regional/national government GIS data portals. Or from some fee sources.  These shapefiles can be imported into Vectorworks as georeferenced layers. Note that they are not neccessarily same precision as a commissioned site survey, and may be out of date.  The massing models of the surrounding buildings can be auto created from the building outlines via the Tools>Records>Modify by Records - Choose the record for the building height.  Vectorworks extrudes each selected bldg outline to height in its record.  They all extrude at same time - no need to do them individually.

forgot to note that the shapefile for elevation contours can be used in vwx to generate 3d polys which can then be used as source contours for a site model. same process as the building outlines.  select the contours (or copy of them) then Tools>records>modify from record > pick the elevation record from the list.
