Twinmotion Experience

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm making the trial to the Twinmotion 2020. It looks like a very powerful tool. With simple models, I can import directly the site model with the different textures, add trees, no problem. I'm now facing some problems with complex site models (please see the image). Do you have any idea of what I'm doing wrong? How you usually deal with this king of files?

Thanks!!!

I am not sure what is wrong for you,

the different Materials on the terrain ?

the Texture stretching along the contours ?

If the latter,

you can click on the UV Options.

(The Icon that looks like the top plan of a church or an unfolded box, left from Move Tool)

By default Twinmotion will use the UVW information provided from the import.

You could try tu use a standard Cubic Map Projection instead.

The second chance yes, I'll give it a try and post the results. Thank you very much!!

It was the UV yes, in in impot options I signed the "Fix UV/Texture" option, it worked out!!

Now, second doubt, if you can help out: We work with dense planting plans. Now we have two chances: place tree-by-tree and make some random plating for the rest or, and it would perfect, to use the "Replace Object" function. I'm facing one of two problems. When import, if a leave, in the Collapse menu, the "Keep Hierarchy", Twimotion creates two objects and the replace won't work out. If I leave the "Collapse by material" it assumes all the trees as a group and when I replace a group of trees transforms in just 1 new replaced tree. See images, please.

How do you deal with this problem. I tried to change grouping in VW, but it didn't made difference

PS: I use the Cinema 4d export. If you want, I can post the example file where I'm making my experiments.

Oh,

I haven't tried the replace option so far.

Did you export C4D with "keep Symbols" on ?

So with "keep Hierarchy" on, C4D should have a hidden Group,

containing the Symbols/Instances, at the bottom of its Object list.

So you should replace the Plant in the Symbol Originals,

not for the Instances. Theoretically.

As I never tried if Symbol Instances come into Twinmotion

or if Twinmotion has a Symbol/Instance Feature at all .....

In the bad case, if not,

You could switch "keep Symbols option OFF. Will give a huge export file but

maybe Twinmotion could deal better with that.

In the worst case, create a VW transfer file and "ungroup" Plant Symbols or

convert to groups (?). Try to give them a name and keep hierarchy to be able

to better find and select them in Twinmotion.

Sorry, I have no Landscape. Just Architecture.

I am not sure if your "Plant Objects" come over correctly for me.

And Export Option is called "Export Symbols as Render Instances".

I tried to export with keep hierarchy.

And in C4D there is the typical hidden Symbols Folder.

But for me it contains empty "Locators" only.

But as the Plants, for me, come over as separate "Image Props",

there is also a Folder for "Auto-rotating image props"

When I select Plants in View, it will select directly the Image Props.

Unfortunately they all have the default standard naming.

So impossible to search or select the correct Plants.

What I don't get,

the C4D file looks ok in C4D.

But I have in "Geometry" Folder lots of Render Instances as expected.

Those all are named to a proper Plant Name.

Unfortunately they are not linked to any Original Symbol Object !?

So useless.

Think I found a work-around.

Image props are, in fact, two images that, when exported to twinmotion, are assumed as 2 separate objects (and you would have to delete one of them of avoid object duplication). If I ungroup the image prop and delete one of them (in VW, before C4D export), I can then apply the replace tool in Twinmotion!!!

Render of images and video: under 3 minutes.

Great !

Yes, Image Props can have 2 Planes.

I also saw them exported as a Group with 2 separate Meshes.

But AFAIK these crossed planes are just an option, similar to

the "look at camera feature, at least when creating these.

But maybe you can simply deactivate the second plane from the OIP ?

It doesn't work for me as it seems that I can not edit nor explode

these VW Plant Objects

BTW,

I was not able to find the Replace Tool or any way to replace Geometry in Twinmotion.

(I just replaced Materials so far)

How does it work ?

@jeff prince

I looked at some documentation online and played around a bit.  You can recreate your image props in TM if your color textures are rebuilt as .psd's with the alpha channel for transparency saved.  Inside TM you need to load the .psd as the color and then activate the "opacity mask."  That will load the alpha channel from that file and you will have transparent image props.  When VW exports out the textures it keeps the alpha channel and the color channel as separate files which TM does not do.

@grant_PD thanks for the reply.

I have also gone that route during testing using my source png files with built in transparency within Twinmotion.  It's easy enough when it is one or two object, but...

I'm hoping the folks at Vectorworks can suggest a method to avoid this since their default plant imageprops do not exhibit this behavior.  It just seems so odd that their plants will make the trip with the alpha intact, but my user created ones won't.  I hope to understand why and apapt my workflow accordingly because remapping all those plants in Twinmotion is a deal breaker when you have 100 of them to do 😞
