Setting up defaults for objects etc, folder locations

grant_PD

Question

I'm starting to do a purge of all the extraneous stuff that VW brings with it (marker types, object libraries I never use, etc) and when I went digging through my user folders in the VW prefs settings I found that most of them were empty.  I have two locations for my folders: 1 in the appdata/roaming location, and one in a workgroup folder in Dropbox.  But actually, it turns out that all of these things I wanted to purge were location in the Program files directory.  Which I find weird because the VW prefs dialog doesn't say it looks there!

Is it safe to remove all of that stuff from the program file location?  I really just want all of these libraries and defaults to be located in the VW workgroup folder.

You don't need to delete the libraries in App Folder.

They will be overwritten or recreated with the next installation.

It is enough to have the same named Files in your User or Workgroup Folder.

Where Workgroup can be accessed by any user, User Folder by current user only.

The File Version from the most priority Folder is used, the lowers will be ignored.

The Hierarchy for Library Files is :

User

Workgroup

App

So for e.g. a Library that the whole office should use,

Put such a file in Workgroup Folder (using same structure),

ignore the file from the App,

but make sure that there is no same file in User Folders,

as these have the highest priority.

BTW,

there is also a switch in VW settings to show system libraries or not.

This way, when off, you will see your own Libraries only and aren't

distracted by the amount of Libraries delivered, which you may not need.

But that means you need to have all Libraries needed for every Tool

in your workgroup or user folder.

Like copying all over from App folder and cleaning up or editing these.

It is in VW Settings, Session tab and called : Enable Vectorworks Libraries.

I tried this years ago,

quickly realized that I will miss lots of Tool's preset libraries that way.

Like unimportant things that I would not customize anyway.

But if you just copy the whole App Libraries over to Workgroup,

you can do that. Then carefully throw out what you really don't need.

But you will not profit from eventual VW (App) Library updates.

I personally went back to VW Libs on.
