Donald Wardlaw
Today I learned that our accounting software is not going to make the transition to Catalina. What a pain. It is really good, and versatile. The options are lousy. Both computers are running Mojave. I don't like the idea of stopping OS progress because of many issues, especially security. So I think I have to take one machine and move it to Catalina, then install Parallels, then install Mojave to see whether the accounting software works in that environment. That machine will be the iMac which is used for most of the CAD work. My questions are these: 1. If I run one machine that uses VW on Catalina, that will mean it has to run 2020? 2. If one machine runs 2020 on Catalina, can a machine running Mohave read 2020 files? 3. Can 2019 in Mojave open 2020 files from Catalina? Many thanks, Donald Quote Link to comment
zoomer
1. AFAIK it should run at least VW 2019, maybe one version older (?) 2. I run VW 2020 fine on Mojave 3. independent from OS. VW 2019 can't open VW 2020 files. But VW 2020 can save as 2019 or lower, which VW 2019 can read. macOS Catalina, again, hasn't any new features I am interested in any way. But it will also not support some of my Apps as being 64 bit only now. So I am still Mojave. There aren't concerns about security as Mojave still gets updates. (Not sure for how many years) So there is no real reason to update to Catalina now. You can just wait another bit (1-2 years ?) and hope your Software will bring a Catalina supporting update until then. Or use that time to find a compatible, even better, Catalina capable Accounting Software option. At least there is no real hurry. Quote Link to comment
Donald Wardlaw
Hi Zoomer, Thank you. Transitioning to a different software is possible, but others, like Quick books aren't nearly as good and complete in my opinion. And the developers of the software we've been using (accountedge pro) now say they will never make it 64 bit, even though they have been saying for months that they would. They offer a cloud based option for twice the monthly price, but would you want to keep the books you can't be without in the cloud? And be hostage to future subscription increases? The the first option is to keep Mohave running for as long as I continue the business, which I hope will be 7 years or more. A virtual environment might be a good option since the master OS environment theoretically can continue to advance as long as the virtual environment does too. If I try to hold the computers back, what happens if they poop out, get lost or destroyed? A question is, how long will we be able to install Mojave? There is still a way to do it via an Apple installer. But if Apple removes that installer before I transition, I could be in a bad spot. Thanks again, it looks like the VW issues are manageable. At least you now know. 12 minutes ago, Donald Wardlaw said: would you want to keep the books you can't be without in the cloud? No. There are many things that I don't want subscription based at all. So that I couldn't access my own work anymore, when I have no more subscription, for what ever reason it may be. And there are many things I will not put in any cloud. In fact I only put things in a cloud, if these are things I don't care if anybody can look at them - or if it aren't mine. 24/7 Access may be another weak point. 12 minutes ago, Donald Wardlaw said: A virtual environment might be a good option Either keeping also old hardware, maybe redundant, if it is so important. Or virtualization. Maybe more reliable (?) 12 minutes ago, Donald Wardlaw said: how long will we be able to install Mojave? You can save the Installer App. I have a copies of all OS Updaters I use somewhere on my disk. Edited January 14, 2020 by zoomer Quote Link to comment
