Data Tag Marionette Network

The data tag tool does almost exactly what I need, but it has a physical connection to the symbol.  I need the symbol and the tag to exist independently so if I move the symbol it won't cause the tag to move.

 

Any thoughts on how/if this could be done with a marionette network?

How about a Data Tag with a leader, but with the attributes of the leader set to an invisible line weight/color? Then set it to move the leader and not the tag.

 

The hard part about using Marionette will be to maintain the link between the object and the tag. It is relatively easy to get the data from a record attached to an object one time. It is much harder to automatically update the data when it is changed on the object to make sure the tag is correct.
