Push/pull tool:sub face mode

Ragnar

Question

I am designing a board 1200x2400mm with 325 holes  with a diameter om 20 mm and a vertical and horisontal distance of 96 mm.

Making one hole in the board is not a problem, using the "Push/pull tool:sub face mode". But making it 325 times...! I don't seam to be able to copy/paste a hole. Nore can I select more than one circle at the time to extrude. Any suggestions?

Yes,

do as much as you can in 2D and extrude the final result.

So Start with your Rectangle,

set the first circle and copy these by an Array.

Move Rectangle to Background by CMD+B

Select all, Rectangle and Circles, and "Clip Surface",

delete the (still selected) Circles.

Select the Resulting 2D Surface and extrude.

If you want to array such a complex geometry later,

please make a Symbol from it and (instance) copy the Symbol.

Otherwise you will slow down VW.

Or Extrude your board and then extrude one cylinder which is the same dimensions as your hole(s) and located at the correct x/y/z to put the whole into the board.

With the cylinder Selected, use Duplicate or Duplicate Array to make the pattern of 325 holes.

Select the Board and all 325 cylinders and Choose Modify:Subtract Solids. Make sure the board is highlighted and click OK.

You should end up with a board with 325 holes.

@zoomer That is certainly possible, but I have never noticed it. But I usually keep my 2D and 3D conversion resolution set to high or very high, so it is possible that the conversion it does is just good enough for me.

Also, I rarely use the Push/Pull tool and usually do separate parts and Add Solids/Subtract Solids. Just being old-school (and lazy to learn the new ways) on my part.

There is the "Fillet" Tool in 3D Tool Box.

Be aware that this Tool always prevented access from former parametrics.

(CTRL+U = ungroup, to get access to your initial 3D Geometry back,

but then the Fillets are lost)

VW 2020 finally changed this with real history based modeling.

In Fillet Tool, take a look at Options and Settings.

I think there was an option to select all Edges at a time.

Would be faster to just deselect the few edges you don't want,

before activating the Tool..

I thought I have seen it lately again.

Maybe it is better now with recent versions.

Maybe not in this case, but often keeping 2D also helps to

keep things more parametric.

Like when re-entering Extrude and "exploding" the Face with those holes,

you could re-access circles to change their radii and such things.

Yet again @zoomer and I think differently.  Rather than fillet 325 edges, I would create a complete negative of the hole (small cylinder of the correct length for the inside of the hole, large cylinder equivalent to where the fillet should end for the "outside" of the hole. Add solids and then fillet between the two) then duplicate this as I describe using the cylinder above and subtract solids.

It does not matter how far above the plate the subtracting surface goes, so make it big enough that it is easy to handle.
