Storeys in symbols

LeeElston

Question

I'm trying to create a symbol of a standard house type to import into a site model. The house type has been created in a file using storeys, then duplicated and a symbol created in the same file. However during the creation of the symbol process the first floor slab seems to be getting fixed onto the ground floor plane, and even if I try to edit the 3d component of the symbol, it won't allow me to change the level. It is at the correct level in the model, just drops a story when I convert to a symbol. I have checked the 'story aware' box in the preferences. I do get a 'illegal objects have been selected' message when creating the symbol but it doesn't seem to highlight which element this refers to....

Any pointers to my mistakes would be appreciated....

All Symbol Instances are exact copies of the Symbol Definition.

All Objects inside a Symbol are frozen to their state and can't

see or react to any parametrics from outside, like Story/Level Settings.

So Story aware or stylized Objects don't work in Symbols.

Even if you workaround by using Design Layer Viewports to copy

your Buildings or Apartments on your Site, it won't work.

You could pack your Building into a Symbol but need to renounce

of any Story bindings, better use fixed values everywhere.

What you can do is to "reference" your Building from an external File

into your Site Drawing File. All changes have to be done from the referenced

File itself  if needed. But after that you can update/refresh your Reference.

Is it not so that walls can be used within symbols, if stories are set up? We tried to make walls (apartments) into symbols without stories, and that doesn't work either, if put on another design layer at some different elevation. At the Nordic Design day some colleagues told us that they were successfully using walls within symbols, but only if stories are set up. They had done a huge public building using room symbols (walls within symbols) and stories.

Boh,

Levels are also no more available in Symbols.

Not sure if it just uses Layer Wall Heights (of the active Layer for all ?) instead

or Walls will just collapse ("Level XXXX doesn't exist" warning)

It is 2 years ago when I tried, tested and failed.

At that point I just decided to avoid that completely and never looked into it again.
