Fixture Symbol RED Box

I wondered the same thing, but guessed it's an indication of the data ports on the fixture

Usually the display is the reference point for fixture orientation, which is what the red box indicates. The data ports are usually on the same side as well.

A red box isn’t an industry standard per se, but finding a graphical way to call out fixtures that need data and indicate their orientation is best practice.

This is correct the red box shows where the power and data ports are on the fixture, and Spotlight uses this as an orientation reference. In my experience most fixture manufacturers use this standard, though as Josh says, there are some notable exceptions such as some of the Varilite range (notably the old 3000 and 3500 series, not sure about the newer models as they are not commonly used in Europe) and the Elation/GLP X4 impression wash range for example.

If desired the red box can be turned off by turning off the Lighting>Input>2D or 3D class respectively.
