3D trouble shooting

Recommended Posts

Looks to me like you are extruding polygons that are not closed all the way.

Double click an extrude. Select the 2d geometry you originally drew. In the Object info Palette, make sure Closed is checked. Exit the extrude.

If you mean something else, you'll need to explain more.

Thanks for your reply,

all steps you mentioned are done but still when i draw a basic rectangular shape or even the 3D shapes that I previously draw turn to look like empty boxes.

the images above is an object I previously draw i 3D and it was fine but when I try to duplicate or any other actions in 3D it shows empty boxes.

I know this sounds simple, but have you moved your navigation after you hit render?  Lots of times I will do a function - solid subtract, for example, and the render will glitch until I orbit or pan and the scene refreshes the geometry.  A longshot I know.  Also - does all your 2d geometry have fill turned on?

EDIT: I just reread your posts and you say it was working fine until you copied and pasted.  That is odd.

A file would help a lot. Some observations about what I'm seeing in your screen shot and a few things to try -

  1. You're working in a mix of 2d layer plane shapes and some 3d surfaces. The layer plane shapes have edges in your image, the true 3d shapes do not because draw edges is turned off. Are you drawing individual planes of your geometry like you would in a polygon modeller?
  2. Is Unified View turned on? You talk about moving from "any layer" to a "3d layer" which leads me to believe that you're working in 2d on some layers and 3d on others. Each layer will have a different view if Unified View is turned off. Screen Plane objects on different layers may disappear depending upon how your Unified View Options are set under the View menu.
  3. What happens if you try putting all of your geometry onto the same layer? If you take all of your geometry and paste it into a new file? Perhaps there's a corrupt object in your file. Pasting into a new file and then back again can often resolve things.
  4. What type of machine are you running Vectorworks on? Perhaps try adjusting your Navigation Graphics setting on the Display tab of the Vectorworks Preferences.
