Jainsworth
Hi all, I have some LiDAR data that I am attempting to play around with and create a site model. The data is free from the Environment Agency (UK) and I have it as a DXF at 1m resolution. Unfortunately, due to the size of the field, and the density of 1 3D loci per metre, there are a mere... 782,864 3D Loci on my drawing. This is causing an insane amount of lag for me! I note that there is a simplify 3D polygon command, but as these are loci and not polygons, I am assuming that this does not work for this data type. Is there any other approach I can take to make the data more manageable? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks Joe Quote Link to comment
Benson Shaw
Hi, Joe I think what you want is the Extract Loci from Point Cloud command. It's in v2019. Command is in the bottom of the Model menu in the Point Clouds heading. It has parameters for number of loci to extract. Here is a link to the Help topic on this: http://app-help.vectorworks.net/2019/eng/VW2019_Guide/SiteModel1/Extracting_3D_Loci_From_a_Point_Cloud.htm?rhhlterm=point%20cloud&rhsyns=%20 Here is link to a short video demo for this and a couple other Point Cloud features in v2019. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZLxdtgVC8A Your signature shows v2018. Look for them, but I don't think v2018 includes any of these features. -B 2 Quote Link to comment
Jainsworth
@Benson Shaw Hi Benson, Thanks for the reply, I do actually have 2019 I just haven't got around to updating my signature (can't remember how, i'll have a look now). Cheers! Joe Quote Link to comment

angelojoseph
In 2018 you could turn the point cloud into 3d loci, it just wasn't as straight forward. Also, I think it was called something different, like "convert to 3d points" or something. Anyway, to the question at hand, you can decimate the point cloud when generating the 3d loci based on a percentage. though the better thing is to start by cleaning it up and filtering outliers and then decimating. However, ~800,000 points is a pretty light-weight point cloud (which is probably fine for a terrain mesh), so I don't get why it would be lagging on your computer. I have some dense scans of about 7MM points that load pretty darn quickly (relative) and have next to no lag while navigationg on my MS surfacebook 2 i7 1 Quote Link to comment
Jainsworth
@angelojoseph Thanks for the reply angelojoseph. I'll have a play around and see if lag improves! Quote Link to comment
