milezee
Very new to VW, just testing import from other file types (I use Rhino3d a lot). Tried to import a Rhino V6 file, no success. Saved the same file to a Rhino V5 file and the import worked fine. Is this something that needs addressing or highlighting as a bug ? Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee PVA - Admin Posted November 29, 2018 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted November 29, 2018 What version of Vectorworks are you currently using? It looks like 6 was released this year, so its possible older versions won't ever be able to handle it, but normally the latest version of Vectorworks is kept within a year or two compatible with other packages like that. I don;t see anything specifically mentioning version support for Rhino in the documentation, just the support for 3DM. In any case if you can send me the file I can submit it and see if thats an upgrade we need to make. 1 Quote Link to comment
milezee
@Jim Wilson apologies Jim, VW 2019, Architect. From the file drop down menu in VW, Imports, there is a specific option Rhino 3dm ? Edited November 29, 2018 by milezee Quote Link to comment

I didnt mean nothing related to Rhino, just that I just didn't see anything mentioning 3DM Version 6 or 3DM Version 5 or anything like that. There is that distinction when we import some other file formats like DWG and SKP. Also: You should now be able to upload 3DMs, I have edited the forum permissions. 1 Quote Link to comment
milezee
a V5 & V6 file attached for comparison 👍 Rhino V5 Test.3dm Rhino V6 Test.3dm Quote Link to comment
Mark Aceto
Yep, this was the case in 2018 and now in 2019. I deal with this issue regularly, so I'd like to upvote the request for v6 import compatibility. Edited November 29, 2018 by Mark Aceto 3 Quote Link to comment
Kevin McAllister
I'm using Rhino as well. I'm sure I'll encounter the need for v6 soon too. Kevin 1 Quote Link to comment
milezee
@Mark Aceto @Kevin McAllister well hopefully now a few users are making their Rhino/VW workflow known V6 compatibility might make an appearance 🙂 chaps I'm a complete VW newbie, what's the best way to import a Rhino model (say a kitchen cabinet) and make it a VW class object or symbol, where I can use like a custom cabinet ? tia Quote Link to comment

milezee
@Mark Aceto that bad ? the Rhino5 file imports fine, although that is as far as I got 🤣. What are the challenges with a 3dm file inside of VW ? Quote Link to comment
Mark Aceto
VW hates meshes, so: Step 2: simplify mesh Step 3: convert to a generic solid Nebertheless, it will continue to slow down DL and SLVP, and massively increase file size. The only rhino objects I import are custom (often grasshopper) “sculpted” models. Something like a cabinet, I would prefer to model natively in VW to keep the file lightweight and responsive. I go between Rhino and VW all the time. Properly constructed objects in Rhino usually come into VW as NURBS surfaces and NURBS curves which are very useable. I often Stitch and Trim collections of NURBS surfaces to create solids. Rhino closed polysurfaces will normally appear as generic solids in VW. Rhino isn't really a mesh based piece of software so I'm surprised you're encountering a lot of meshes. That said, I often send VW objects to Rhino to convert them to mesh because the Rhino mesh command has so much finer control and generates clean meshes for 3d printing. milezee
just downloaded VW 2020, still the import for Rhino V6 files fails. This didn't work in VW 2019 either. Having to constantly change Rhino files to V5 so they can imported into VW2019 & VW2020, please can we fix this 🤔 Quote Link to comment
Guest Wes Gardner
What I would like to see is the import of Rhino's layer structure...similar to how we import a .dwg Quote Link to comment

Guest Wes Gardner
@milezee...yep, I'm a fan of V6 Quote Link to comment
milezee
@Wes Gardner quality that Wes, there's some pretty hardcore surfacing modelling right there, my work doesn't quite go as far as that but I've done some pretty cool things with Rhino over the years, pound for pound its probably the best 3d software out there. Only just starting using VW this year and am generally liking it, especially extracting data and adding the worksheets onto the sheet layers. Please VW people make the Rhino import option work properly ☺️ Quote Link to comment
Guest Wes Gardner
@milezee...sounds like an opportunity for an Enhancement request...I think I'll file one 🙂 Quote Link to comment
milezee
@Wes Gardner excellent 👍, Wes how do we request that the import feature be looked at so we can import V6 files ? Quote Link to comment
Guest Wes Gardner
@milezee...since it's not really a bug, the best way is to use the "Wishlist" function here on the Board. Wes Quote Link to comment
A.D.K.
Bump and another vote for Rhino 6 support, please. In 2019 and 2020 would be great, but I get it if we can't have it retro in 2019. 1 Quote Link to comment

Rhino V6 has been out for years now, Rhino V7 WIP is in its final stages and I would anticipate a release by the end of the year 😂😂👍👍👍 Quote Link to comment

A.D.K.
Thanks all. I'm currently exporting dwg from rhino and it's a bit awful. Quote Link to comment
